Ruth Laverna Genzlinger Corey was born February 1, 1908 at Osmond, Nebraska to John and Agnes (McGill) Turner, and she died February 21, 2005, at the Hi-Park Care Center in Red Wing, Minnesota, at the age of 97 years and 20 days. Ruth attended a rural school near Osmond, Nebraska. When she was seven years old, her parents moved to a farm northeast of Burke, South Dakota. She was a graduate of the Burke High School class of 1923. She attended Southern State Teachers College at Springfield, South Dakota, graduating in 1925 with a state certificate to teach. Later she attended various workshops for additional college credits. She taught school for 25 years, all in one-room school houses, 14 of which were in the Lucas School. Ruth was a member of the Union Baptist Church at Burke, South Dakota, and was devoted to her faith. Ruth married Harry J. Genzlinger on June 15, 1938, and lived for 40 years on a farm near Lucas, South Dakota, except for several winters that were spent in Harlingen, Texas. When Harry became ill, they moved to Watertown, South Dakota, in 1978, where she resided until January of 2005. Harry passed away March 23, 1982. Ruth married Howard Corey of Watertown on April 21, 1984, and he passed away in 1992. Ruth is survived by her two sons: Vern and wife Mary Ellen of Red Wing, MN; and Lowell and wife Alice of Boulder, CO; five grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands: Harry Genzlinger and Howard Corey; and two sisters: Isabelle Corey and Cornelia Swift.
