Grew up on a wheat ranch near Page Washington. As a young man he went to work as a helper for a well driller who was drilling a well on the ranch. This was to become a life long profession. Early in his career he fell 80 feet from an oil drilling rig in Texas and broke bones in both feet and legs. He worked as a core driller on Grand Coulee Dam. He was working on the Panama Canal when World War II started. He also worked in Alaska. He retired at age 72.
Jake volunteered for the Army in 1918. In World War II he was a member of the Navy Sea Bee's. He was stationed in the South Pacific.
Jake was married twice. His first wife was Frances Green who he married in Yakima in 1924. His scond wife was Clara Barba.
