Maria Elisabeth Fischel was born at Essenheim (near Mainz) in the Palatinate region of Germany. She was the daughter of Johann Jakob Schmidt and Gertraut. The majority of Maria's descendants used the spelling of the surname as Fishel beginning in the early 1800s. Maria married Johannes Fischel (1703-1786) on 04 Apr 1728 at Essenheim (near Mainz) in the Palatinate region of Germany.
Johannes, Maria and the first five of their children emigrated to America on the Ship Loyal Judith, leaving from Rotterdam, by way of Cowes in England, and then arriving in Philadelphia on 03 September 1742 under command of Captain James Cowie.
Johannes and Maria became members of the Moravian Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania. Johannes and Maria were the parents of nine known children, five girls and fouir boys. Some records list a tenth child, Helen, but Helen wasn't a name of that time period and she is not listed in the York Moravian records. Johannes and Maria were the grandparents of 39 known children.
Johannes and Maria were buried at the York Moravian Church graveyard, at York, York County, Pennsylvania. The York Moravian Church graveyard was later abandoned in the 1800s and many (or all?) of the graves moved to Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, York County, Pennsylvania. Does anyone know if Johannes and Maria's graves were moved?
