Boone Co Republican 24 Nov 1875
The suspense attending the disappearance of the unfortunate old Mr. Carmichael was relieved last Saturday, when the body of the wanderer was found near Ridgeport, on the land adjoining the poor farm. He had wandered over six miles from home, and the supposition is that he died from exposure the first night. He was found by a boy lying in a slough, dead, and word was immediately sent to his friends and the body taken home.'
The circumstances surrounding the case are sad. The old man was over seventy years of age, being as helpless as a child. The worst was feared when he wandered off a week ago last Sunday, but Friday the news came that he had been found at the house of a Swede in the northern part of this township, and a team was sent out to bring him home. Upon arriving where he was supposed to be it was found that another man had been mistaken for him, and the old gentleman was still missing. His aged wife, relying on the rumor that he was found alive and well, prepared the house for his reception, when the news came that he was found lifeless, and the joy of the household was turned to mourning.
The funeral took place last Sunday morning. Mr. Carmichael was a member of the masonic fraternity. Mrs. H.C. Shurter and Mrs. L. Zimbelman are daughters of his. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction.
