Grandpa had jokingly said to Walter that he had dropped the second 'n' in his last name, 'because he didn't know how to pronounce it.' | 5788 | Debharrvey: This is the person (referred to as "Andrew Buxmann, husband of Ruth Gertrude Greb") that my mother (Katherine (Buxman) Wiest, b. 10 March 1909. (RIN 7) has always referred to as her great grandfather--i.e., the father of her grandfather, Georg Peter Buxmann, b. 1838, the latter called "Peter Buxmann" in the family. See note for his father, Johannes Buxmann (RIN 1234), b. ABT 1774 Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov, 29 July, 1996, gives all Buxmanns (written as Buksmann in Russian transliteration) from the colony of Mueller for the censuses of 1834, 12.10.1850, and 23.01.1858. Andreas Buxman (named as "Johann Andreas Buxmann" is shown as 23.5, 39.5, and 47 years old at the 1834, 1850 and 1858 censuses, and his wife is shown as Gertrude. David Schmidt of Martinez, CA, remarked in a letter of 13 August, 1996, that "Volga Germans were usually called by only one of their names (Rufname) and the Rufname was usually the second name (examples: Johann Andreas = Andreas; Georg Peter = Peter)." In a note of 13 August, 1996 David Schmidt notes further that the 1798 census of Mueller shows two sons of Johann Georg Buxman, one named Johannes (age 24 in 1798) and the other, also named Johannes (aged 22 in 1798). Which of the two sons of Johann Georg named Johannes is the father of the two brothers, Georg Buxmann (age 30 in 1834, therefore born abt 1804), and Andreas Buxmann (age 28 in 1834, therefore born abt 1806), as well as of the three more brothers, George Martin, born ABT 1809, JOHANN ANDREAS, age 23.5 in 1834 and therefore born ABT 1811, and Johannes, born ABT 1813, (and whether the three latter are also brothers of the two former is not known for certain as of August 18, 1996. According to data from Pleve in 1993 the Johannes born in 1774 married Anna Barbara Keil, who was born in 1771. The younger Johannes, born in 1776, is not shown as married in Pleve's initial report. Therefore, a tentative judgment is that the older Johannes Buxmann (b. 1774) is the father of the 2 = 3 = 5 sons. Additional information is from Ezra Buxman of Greeley, Colorado about his father, Henry, and grandfather, Peter, and great grandfather, Andrew (Andreas).
