5102 | Debharrvey: Additional information from Ezra Buxman about his father, Henry, and grandfather, Peter, and great grandfather, Andrew. Gertrude died 7 weeks after her husband, Andrew. Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov, 29 July, 1996, gives all Buxmanns (written as Buksmann in Russian transliteration) from the colony of Mueller for the censuses of 1834, 12.10.1850, and 23.01.1858. Gertrude is shown as aged 33 and 40 at the 1850 and 1858 censuses, and as the wife of Johann Andreas Buxmann (aged 23.5, 39.5, and 47 years old at the three censuses named). David Schmidt of Martinez, CA, remarked in a letter of 13 August, 1996, that "Volga Germans were usually called by only one of their names (Rufname) and the Rufname was usually the second name (examples: Johann Andreas = Andreas; Georg Peter = Peter)." | Greb, Gertrude Ruth (I96399)

5108 | Debharrvey: August 23, 1991 Uncle Albert referred to his parents getting a letter from her in 1932 in which she intimated that times would be very difficult for the German people in Russia. Grandpa and Grandma Buxman feared that she would be sent to Siberia in cattle cars and dumped off, "which probably happened," according to Uncle Albert. (This evening my mother (Aug. 23, 1991) added that she thought her name was Eve or Eva.) July, 1993, we met Eva Buxman's daughter, Paulina Linder of Zaretchna, Kazakhstan, who gave us information about her mother and father. Birth year by inference "she died in 1939 at age 66." Paulina said her mother had 14 children in all, many died; there were two sets of twins among those who died. Year of birth and death confirmed in May 1995 by Sara Schaffner, grandaughter, daughter of Peter Maier. April 11, 1994 letter from Paulina Lender tells that her mother had 2 sets of twins, and 15 children in all, 10 of whom died in early childhood (or in infancy), with 5 surviving to adulthood--Heinrich, Peter, Sara, Katrinlizbet, and Paulina. [Note; here she makes no reference to a 'Samuel.'] She said she was the youngest. William Buxman of Parlier, CA (brother to my mother) said he remembered his father (Carl Adolf Buxman) saying that when he (Carl) was coming to America his sister,Eva, had planned to come also, but in St. Petersburg 'she got cold feet,' and returned to Wiesenmueller. | Buxmann, Eva (I96423)

5110 | Debharrvey: Birthyear is inference from 'age 76 in 1993' In 1994 Paulina and her daughter, Maria, said the name was spelled Lender (in Russian). I had earlier had it as Linder, but with their correction I'll now spell it as they prefer. (Their pronunciation sounds like 'Linder' in German, with the short 'i') In August, 1994 a letter from Margaret Decker, recently arrived in Dueren, Germany, reported that Paulina had died in May. A phone call to her grandaughter, Valya Schabert in Germany (spoke to Valya's husband, Waldemar) confirmed it; she died while working in her garden harvesting onions in Zaretchna, Kazakhstan--just across the Tobol River from Kustanai where she found us in 1993. (For details of this astounding event see article by William M. Wiest, "Impressions from our trip to Russia (Saratov villages) and Kazakhstan (Kustanai area) in 1993," in Journal of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, Winter, 1994, (Vol. 17, No. 4). | Maier, Paulina (I96437)

5127 | Debharrvey: Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov University, provided in 1993 in Saratov, shows Johann Georg Buxmann (born 1743 or 1744) as the first Buxmann to enter Russia from Germany after the invitation of the Czaress, Catharina the Great. He was said to be of the Evangelical (Lutheran) faith, and from the village of Reinheim (FUberau) near Darmstadt, and a tailor by trade. Pleve further reports that on August 16, 1767 Johann Georg Buxmann and his wife and brother (Johann Jakob, born in 1753) went [presumably from Saratov where they had been 'processed'] to the colony of MFuller. Where the marriage between Johann Georg and Anna Maria took place is not known, whether in Germany, enroute to Russia, or in Russia. There is no record of the marriage in Ueberau/Reinheim church records. Note, according to Ueberau/Reinheim church records, Johann George was abt 22 at entrance to Russia, and his brother (unmarried at the time) was abt 12. | Buxmann, Johann Georg (I96323)

In a note of 13 August, 1996 David Schmidt notes that the 1798 census of MFuller shows two sons of Johann Georg Buxman, one named Johannes (age 24 in 1798) and the other, also named Johannes (aged 22 in 1798). Which of the two sons of Johann Georg named Johannes is the father of the two brothers, Georg Buxmann (age 30 in 1834, therefore born abt 1804), and Andreas Buxmann (age 28 in 1834, therefore born abt 1806), as well as of the three more brothers, George Martin, born ABT 1809, JOHANN ANDREAS, age 23.5 in 1834 and therefore born ABT 1811, and Johannes, born ABT 1813, (and whether the three latter are also brothers of the two former is not known for certain as of August 18, 1996. According to data from Pleve in 1993 the Johannes born in 1774 married Anna Barbara Keil, who was born in 1771. The younger Johannes, born in 1776, is not shown as married in Pleve's initial report. Therefore, a tentative judgment is that the older Johannes Buxmann (b. 1774) is the father of the 2 = 3 = 5 sons. | Buxmann, Johannes (I96322)
