Christ Zundel war North Dakotas siebtes Opfer schwerer Stürme im Winter 1937. Christ, 50, und Mike Heidinger, ein Nachbar, transportierten gerade eine Ladung Kohle von Diesem zur Zundel-Farm, als sich die Tragödie ereignete. Das gummibereifte Fahrzeug blieb in Schneewehen stecken und die Pferde zappelten anderthalb Meilen vom Zundel-Haus entfernt. Beide Männer versuchten zunächst, die Strecke zu Fuß zurückzulegen, aber Herr Zundel war müde und kehrte zum Wagen zurück. Heidinger wanderte sechs Stunden lang umher, bevor er schließlich auf der weniger als eine Meile entfernten Fred-Wegenast-Farm Schutz fand. Herr Heidinger war stark erfroren. Herr Zundel hinterließ eine Frau und mehrere Kinder. Die Beerdigung wurde aufgrund blockierter Straßen auf später in der Woche verschoben.

Alvina Jerke, 88, Wishek, N.D., died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, in Wishek Nursing Home.
Alvina Suess was born Jan. 15, 1909, in Cleveland, N.D., where she grew up and attended school.
She married Chris Jerke Nov. 6, 1932, in Medina, N.D. They lived in the Gackle, N.D., and Cleveland area. She entered the nursing home in 1987.
She is survived by her husband, Jud, N.D.; a son, Donald (Ann), Jud, N.D.; a daughter, Arlene Clifton, Owings Mills, Md.; a brother, Ted, Hemet, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Christ Jerke, 101, Gackle, ND died Sunday morning June 26, 2011 at the Wishek Home for the Aged in Wishek, ND.
Christ Jerke was born May 17, 1910 on the family homestead 5 miles northwest of Gackle, ND, the son of John Jerke and Maria (Seitz) Jerke. He attended a 1 room school in Griffin Township and the Gackle Public School and also the NDAC in Fargo, ND from 1920 to 1930 taking courses in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Woodshop, Blacksmithing, Machining and Accounting.
He and Alvina Suess were married November 6, 1932 at Freidens Congregational Church near Medina, ND. They lived in the Gackle-Cleveland area and in 1940 they moved to their farm home 5 miles north of Gackle. Following the death of his wife in 1997 he continued to reside on the farm in Gackle. He entered the Gackle Care Center in 2003 and in 2009 he entered the Wishek Home for the Aged.
He was a member of the Gackle Congregational Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Arlene Clifton, Owings Mills, MD; 2 granddaughters, Tonya Clifton Sheffer and husband Michel Scheffer, Reisterstown, MD; Tara Clifton and husband Dan Ryder, Bethesda, MD; 1 great granddaughter, Ada Clifton Ryder and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons, Donald and Lloyd, son-in-law Ray Clifton and brothers, Edward, Emanuel, Rudolf, Gustav, John, and sisters, Bertha, Louisa, Lydia, Emily and Maria.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Friday July 1, 2011 at the First United Church of Christ in Gackle, ND with Pastor Timothy Blackman, officiating.

Mr. Jerke was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Jamestown, the son of Christ and Alvina (Suess) Jerke. He lived on a farm near Cleveland, N.D., until he was five years old, when the family moved to a farm near Gackle. He attended Gackle School and graduated from Gackle High School. He attended a business college in Fargo, N.D. He enjoyed driving school bus, tour buses and appointment driving for Gackle Care Center. He owned and operated a trucking business and farmed with his father.
He married Ann Henke on Jan. 8, 1996, at Aberdeen, S.D. They lived on the farm north of Gackle. He was a member of Gackle United Church of Christ and served on the church board. He also served on the township board. He enjoyed reading, gardening, music and roundtable coffee time.
He is survived by his wife; father, Gackle; a sister, Arlene Clifton, Ownings Mills, Md.; three stepdaughters, Leslie Dockter, New Rockford, N.D., Camille Weixel, Eau Claire, Wis., and Amy (Shaun) Duffield, Lutz, Fla.; two grandchildren; and special friends Chance and Harlie Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Lloyd; and a brother-in-law, Ray Clifton.
Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, First United Church of Christ, Gackle, with the Rev. Gordon Moen officiating.

Raymond Wentz, 91, Streeter, ND died Early Thursday morning February 12, 2015 at the Napoleon Care Center in Napoleon, ND.
Raymond Wentz was born June 25, 1923 at Streeter, ND, the son of George Wentz and Margaret (Graf) Wentz. He attended the Streeter Public School, went through 2 years of high school.
He went to the CCC for a year. He was in charge of the camp, which closed because war broke out.
He and Delores Fischer were married January 1, 1942 at Vancouver, WA. He was drafted into the US Army in February 1942. He went to Airplane Mechanics School for 6 months in Amarillo, TX. He then was stationed at Myrtle Beach, SC as an Airplane Mechanic. Ray was shipped to London, England for 6 months to be a German translator. He was discharged February 16, 1946 with the rank of CPL and returned to North Dakota.
They moved to Danzig and made their home on a farm for a year and then went back to Streeter and farmed in the area.
He and Lois Burleson were married in 1985 and continued to live in Streeter where he worked for the US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in the Streeter-Medina area. In 2004 they moved to Jamestown.
He was a lifetime member of the Streeter American Legion Post #265.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; four sons, Ray, Kenneth, Curtiss and Steven Wentz; one daughter, Maxine Lloyd; one stepson, Lynn Burleson, one stepdaughter, Jolene Weick; 10 grandchildren, five step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, nine step great grandchildren, and a sister, Etta Feigert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Bonnie, a grandson, Cody, seven brothers, Albert, Emil, LeRoy, Arthur, Clarence, Ernest, Ed and five sisters, Martha, Lydia, Ione, Viola and Marie.
Memorial Service – 1:00 PM Monday February 16, 2015 at the Haut Funeral Chapel in Jamestown, ND with Pastor Bryce Tahran, officiating

Merlyn O. Gunsch passed away peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 12, 2017 at EMVH. Cause of death was complications due to a brain aneurysm and subsequent strokes.
Merlyn was born August 6, 1936 in Bismarck, ND the first of 3 children born to Otto & Rose Marie (Wentz) Gunsch. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Elgin, ND.
Merlyn served 4 years in the United States Navy. He attended the College of Pharmacy at North Dakota State University and Graduate School in Chemistry at Montana State University. Dad owned and operated the Rexall Drug Store in Malta, MT and the Seeley Lake Pharmacy in Seeley Lake, MT. He then went to work for the Indian Health Service from which he retired in June 2000. Dad had a great love of the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, back packing and camping, and he passed this love on to his kids.
Merlyn always said that of all his experiences, military service was his greatest and best. He was a very proud veteran. He will be buried in the Veterans Section of the Lewistown City Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and the Fergus Post #16 American Legion Honor Guard.
Merlyn is survived by his 4 children, Robert (Tami) Gunsch of Circle, MT; Gretchen (Harve) Kimm of Manhattan, MT; William (Tara) Gunsch of Belgrade, MT; David (Sheryl) Gunsch of E. Helena, MT; a brother, Richard (Marilyn) Gunsch of Bismarck, ND; a sister, Kathy Decker of Laguna Beach, CA; 8 grandchildren, Courtney (Chad), Anthony, Stephanie (Brandon), Reece, Bridger (Johna), Madison, Nicholas & Hunter; 7 great-grandchildren, Bethany, Tucker, Braelynn, Brantley, Audrey, Blaiz & Maggie; his “favorite” niece, Dayna (Andrew Maltin) Decker; his god-daughter, Lori; and nephews, Dan, Merle and Michael. He loved all of you very much.
He was preceded in death by his father, Otto Gunsch; his mother, Rose Marie (Wentz) Gunsch; several uncles and aunts; and niece, Sandra.
Graveside Services with Military Honors at the Lewistown City Cemetery.
