Ries, age 91, of Elma, IA, died on Monday, September 21, 2009 at Colonial Manor in Elma. Mary Catherine (Schwickerath) Ries was born on November 15, 1917 to Lambert and Barbara (Pierre) Schwickerath in North Washington, IA. Mary attended St. Mary's School in North Washington. On November 26, 1940 Mary was united in marriage to Ralph M. Ries at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. To this union eight children were born. Mary and Ralph rented farms for seven years in Chickasaw County and in 1947 they purchased their farm in Howard County, a mile west of Elma. In 1975 they retired and built a new home on the west side of Elma where Mary resided until moving into the Colonial Manor in January of 2007. She was an active farm girl growing up and farmed side by side with Ralph and their children. In 1978 she became a kitchen employee at Colonial Manor. The residents, staff and visitors fell in love with Mary's cookies and all the many baked goods she made. In 1993 Mary retired again to continue with other hobbies. Mary enjoyed crocheting, quilting, playing cards, baking and cooking, spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grand children and even a great great grandchild. Family was number one to Mary. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of a women's club called Friends and Neighbors. Mary is survived by four sons, John L. (Cathy) Ries of Elma, IA, Ed R. (Jean) Ries of Spring Valley, MN, Mike L. (Janice) Ries of Cresco, IA and Gary L. (Mary Jo) Ries of Elma, IA; two daughters, Elaine (Chuck) Laures of Osage, IA and Marilyn (Gary) Schaudenecker of Alta Vista, IA; 17 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; one brother Reynold (Corrine) Schwickerath of New Hampton and one sister-in-law Margaret Schwickerath of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph on December 3, 2001; two daughters Janice and Mary Ann in infancy; two sisters Josephine Schwickerath and Martha (Vernon) Sinnwell; four brothers, Walter Schwickerath, Ed Schwickerath, Louis (Orella) Schwickerath and Vincent (Marie) Schwickerath. Funeral service will be on Monday, January 14, at Word of Faith Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dom Vetter officiating. Burial will be held at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 – 4 at Bismarck Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Reinhold was born April 13, 1932 to Edward and Christina (Weisser) Sayler, in McIntosh County. He was raised and educated in Wishek and graduated from Wishek High School. Following high school he joined the National Guard and was stationed in Alabama during the Korean War. He married Ella Mae Wagner in Mercer on Jan. 14, 1955 and together had two sons. He was employed with Frontier Airlines for 32 years, starting as an agent and later became the manager of the Bismarck station. In 1976 he started Sanitary Systems and worked there until he retired due to health reasons. Reinhold loved woodworking, animals, working with horses and most importantly spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ella, Bismarck, sons, Greg (Robin), Pasadena, MD; Jeff and special friend, Darcy, Mandan; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers; 4 sisters; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 3 sisters and grandson, Christopher. Born on March 29, 1938 in Carson, N.D., Robert Alvin was a son of the late Henry and Ruth (Traverse) Scheerer. As a young man, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific and Far East during the Vietnam War. Bob was proud of his 9-year military service and earned the rank of E-6 along with several medals before his discharge in 1966. He married Doris M. (Page) on Feb. 20, 1968. Bob was an electrician by trade. He enjoyed reading, tinkering around the house, fishing and camping, especially at Tanglewood Campgrounds. Bob also enjoyed being active in the community. He served as the area's Bloodmobile Coordinator for 12 years. He was a member and former trustee of Blossburg's First United Methodist Church. Other memberships and service in Blossburg included their Volunteer Fire Co., the first chief to be appointed for the Ambulance Association and a past commander of the American Legion Post 572. Bob also held life-memberships with the Blossburg V.F.W. Post 8730 and Wellsboro's Disabled American Veterans. Survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Doris; three children, Robert Scheerer Jr. of Lock Haven, Mark Scheerer of Fla. and Bobbi Jo Scheerer of Texas; a son-in-law, Mark Lawson of Texas; step sons; Jim (Kim) Sampson of Covington and Randy Sampson of WA; nine grandchildren; six siblings, Elaine Duncan and Betty Nutter both of CA, Larry (Carol) Scheerer of AL, Don (Eileen) Scheerer of UT, Gary Scheerer of AZ and Norma (Paul) Owens of Texas; several nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved pets. Friends may call Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Zwicharowski's, 314 Granger St., Blossburg with services following at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Arbon Cemetery at a later date with military honors accorded. Elmer Schnabel was born on September 15, 1921, to Edward and Helen (Neuhardt) Schnabel at Wolsey. He attended school in the Alpena and Wessington Springs area and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1941. He entered the United States Army in 1942 at Fort Croak, NE and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He served in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and three overseas service bars. While in Germany he was an interpreter and chauffer. In June of 1947, Elmer married Inez Orth. They moved to Huron and he worked for Standard Oil Company. They later moved to a farm near Alpena. He sold out in 1955 and they moved to California. Later returned to Huron where he worked for the Huron School system at the Huron Arena as head maintenance man for 28 years. In October of 1973, Elmer married Maxine Remme. He retired at age 62 and at age 65 he went to work at the Huron Airport for 10 years. Elmer was a great handyman. He could fix and build many things. He spent many hours in his beloved shop tinkering and fixing things. He also enjoyed going fishing with his cousins and friends. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, William Reaves American Legion Post #7, Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, and the Sportsman Club and was always a willing volunteer. He is survived by his 2 sisters: Hazel (Al) Runge of Huron, and Phyllis (Jack) Younie of Reno, NV; several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his second wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters Luella and Leona, 2 brothers, Lee and Robert and 2 brothers-in-law, Leland Kogel and Aswald Pederson. His Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 21, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Grover officiating.
