Great Grand father of Emma. ---------------------------- Services for Lawrence Virgil Hanson, 86, Elwood, will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 25, 2004, at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Steve Cooney as celebrant. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery with military honors by the Elwood Honor Guard. Lawrence died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. He was born March 16, 1918, near Smithfield to George and Mary (Fox) Hanson. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1936. He worked on the Tri-County Project and later moved to Buhl, Idaho, where he was employed with a farm equipment company. On June 7, 1941, he married Ruth Daiss at Buhl, Idaho. On April 2, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and saw extensive duty overseas. Following his discharge on Oct. 8, 1945, the couple returned to Elwood where he purchased an implement dealership, operating as Hanson Implement until 1965. He served as Superintendent of Utilities in the Village of Elwood for 21 years, and later worked for Leggott Plumbing. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus at Smithfield and has served on the church board for 39 years. He had a permanent membership in the Elwood Legion Post No. 290. He had served on the Elwood Village Board for 16 years and the Gosper County Selective Service Board for 23 years. He was a past member of the Elwood Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce and had served on the volunteer fire department. During his lifetime, L.V. enjoyed farming and raising cattle on an acreage near Smithfield. The couple enjoyed traveling, which included trips to Florida, Texas and Nevada. In 2001 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and during those 60 years they made annual trips to visit family in Idaho. He had a great appreciation for God, life, family, the good earth and many friends. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hanson, Elwood; two sons, Dennis (fianc?, Malika Cambra) Hanson, Boulder City, Nev., and Doug (Jackie) Hanson, Hickman; two brothers, Donald (Phyllis) Hanson, and Robert Hanson, all of Smithfield; two granddaughters, Corrin (Andy) Weekly, Lincoln, and Kimberly Hanson, Tempe, Ariz.; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Weekly. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today, March 24, at St. John's Catholic Church in Smithfield, with the rosary to be recited tonight at 6:30 p.m., also at the church. Born Aug. 11, 1940, in Mercersburg, she was the daughter of Barbara Timmons Clark of Claylick, Pa., and the late Roy Wilbur Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin R. Hawbaker, on May 22, 1997. She was employed for 19 years by J. Schoeneman Co., Chambersburg. She was a former employee of Wagner's Market and Uni-Mart, both of Mercersburg. She was last employed by Letter kenny Army Depot. She also baby-sat at her home. She was a member of Kasiesville Bible Church. She is survived by three daughters, Diane M. Stoner and Ellen Michelle Black, both of Mercersburg, and Sharon A. Luick of Roxbury, Pa.; one son, Barry R. Hawbaker of Mercersburg; two sisters, Mary Catherine Atherton of Mercersburg and Betty Daugherty of Fort Loudon, Pa.; five grandchildren; and her companion of eight years, Ronald E. Buterbaugh. She was preceded in death by a brother. Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Kasiesville Bible Church. The Rev. James A. Dodge and the Rev. Ronald W. Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Brethren Cemetery, Welsh Run, Pa. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Obit: Kent News-Journal, March 19, 1912, p-1 "Auto Injuries Are Fatal To Marie Hempel Services for Mrs. Marie Hempel of Seattle, former resident of the Meridian district east of kent, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Seattle Wednesday night, were conducted, saturday aftrenoon at three o'clock, in the chapel of the Kent Funeral Home with Elder C. A. Seriver of Seattle, officiating. Mrs. Hempel was injured when an automobile driven by her son, Melvin N. Hempel, collided on a Seattle street with a pickup truck driven by Leonard M. Langen of Kenmore. She was taken to Harborview County Hospital for treatment but succumbed a few hours later early Thursday morning. Melvin Hempel was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries. Mrs. Hempel was widely-known in the Kent community, having lived in the Meridian district for 22 years before moving to Seattle in 1909 where she had since made her home. She lived at 1512 15th Ave. S.W. Sixty-four years of age, Mrs. Hempel was born in Germany on September 26, 1877. She had lived in the United States 45 years. She was born at her home south of New Leipzig, on July 19, 1919, to Christian and Sophia (Trautman) Bader. She received her schooling at a rural school south of New Leipzig. On Nov. 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Albert Hirning at the Neuberg Church near Burt. After their marriage, the couple farmed southeast of Mott and in 1943, they moved to a farm southeast of Bentley. In 1959 they moved in to Mott. Sophia was employed at the Mott Public School as a cook for many years. Albert passed away in March of 1986. In 2007, Sophia moved to Fergus Falls, Minn., where she was a resident of the Sheridan House. Sophia is survived by her daughter, Arliss Lentini, Owasso, Okla.; and her son, Harvey (Joyce) Hirning, Ashby, Minn.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Lorina Schantz, Glen Ulin; and a brother, Walter Bader, Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Adolf (A.J.), Ervin and Herbert; and two sisters, Ada Roseberry and Emma Friez. Services are planned for Sophia in Mott. He was 85. Services were June 13 at Heritage Community Bible Church. Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery. He was born Dec. 11, 1915, in Bruning, Neb. On May 18, 1935, he married Bertha Graff in Brighton. Hofferber farmed in Prospect Valley for 80 years. He was a member of the Colorado Seed Growers Association, Colorado State Fair and National Western Stock Show. He was a deacon and member of Zoar Congregational Church. His interests included recreational-vehicle travel, music, dancing and playing the dulcimer.
