The Java Herald, Java, South Dakota - September 30, 1926
Ludwig Boehler Called By Death
Passes after lingering illness:
Came to this country in 1888
The community was deeply shocked last Saturday at the news of the death of Ludwig Boehler, a well-known and respected pioneer of this community, after a lingering illness of several months duration.
Ludwig Boehler was born August 18, 1855 at Rohrbach, South Russia, where he grew to young manhood. In 1884 he was married to Christina Elser and four years later the family came to the United States and homesteaded in Sutley, northwest of Java. In 1903 his wife died and later he married Mrs. Christina Kunz. In 1910 he retired from active farming and he and his wife moved to Java, where they made their home. Mrs. Boehler preceded him in death in May 1925.
The deceased was always in good health, never was ill or ailing until last June when he became suddenly ill and was taken to Aberdeen, where he underwent an operation for kidney trouble. After the operation Mr. Boehler began to gain rapidly and after a while returned to Java. Apparently feeling in the best of health on the first day of his arrival home, he enjoyed the visits of many of his old friends and went to bed in a very pleasant state of mind. At about three o'clock the following morning he became violently ill, necessitating his return to the hospital in Aberdeen, where he became steadily weaker, life departing at about seven o'clock on Friday evening, September 24, 1926.
Ludwig Boehler was highly respected and well liked by all who knew him and enjoyed a large list of friends. He was one of the oldest of the pioneers of this section, coming here in 1888, when this country was in its infancy. He was a member of the Reformed Church and was a good Christian man. He loved his step-children and treated them as if they were his own. He will be greatly missed by all who were acquainted with him.
He leaves to mourn his passing an adopted daughter, Mrs. Jacob Gill of Eureka, a step daughter, Mrs. Karl (Christina) Koenig of Paradise, North Dakota, a step son, William Kunz of Java, two sisters, Mrs. Conrad Ackerman of Java, and Mrs. Anton Almendinger of Selby, five brothers, two of whom reside in Russia, Peter Boehler of Isabel, Fred Boehler of Pollock, and Gottlieb Boehler of Java, besides a number of grandchildren and a host of friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. J. Bohler of the Reformed Church officiating. Internment was made in the Reformed Cemetery northwest of the city. Appropriate music was rendered and there were many beautiful floral offerings from loving friends and relatives.
The Herald extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Blanche M. Hartmann, 87, formerly of Bucyrus, died Thursday evening, January 5, 2012 at Doctors Hospital in Columbus.
Blanche was born September 7, 1924 near Zeeland, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Linda (Ochsner) Boschee. She spent her childhood and youth in Zeeland. Following high school, she studied at the Dakota Business College and, having completed her studies, became Assistant Manager of the bank in her hometown.
She had four brothers and sisters: Stanley Boschee and Deanna Gazette survive while she was preceded in death by Virginia Hellecksen, Charles Boschee and infant brother, Edwin Delmar Boschee.
Blanche was united in marriage to Herman A. Hartmann on May 28, 1946 in Zeeland. The Hartmanns then moved to Marion, South Dakota where Herman was the pastor of Bethel Evangelical and Reformed Church. Their two sons, Mark and David, were born while they resided in Marion. They then moved to Humbird, Wisconsin where they served the Humbird-Black River Falls parish of the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Next, they moved to Baltic, Ohio where their pastorate was the Baltic Charge of the United Church of Christ. Their last parish was at St. John's United Church of Christ in Bucyrus. During that time, they were involved with a pastoral exchange in Germany for one year where they served on the staff of the Vohwinkel Parish of The Evangelical Church in Wuppertal, Germany. For 19 years, Blanche was employed in the payroll department of Swan Hose in Bucyrus.
The Hartmanns lived in retirement in Columbus where they worshipped with the North Congregational United Church of Christ.
She leaves to mourn her husband of 65 years, Herman; sons, Mark of Columbus and David and wife, Arlene, nee Missler, of Toledo along with grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher. Her granddaughter, Katie, died tragically on July 23, 2004.
She was faithful in her support to her husband, family and of her church.
A public memorial service will be held in St. John's United Church of Christ at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 13 with Rev. Steven E. Voelker officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service or during the gathering to be held immediately following the service. A private burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be given to St. John's UCC or North Congregational UCC through Wise Funeral Service.
