Wiest: Burial: Rosebud Cemetery/ Bonesteel, Gregory Co., South Dakota Note: The first place I know of was the farm south of St. Charles. That was the place my father called "the home place." Most of the children were born there. Theon drove me down there once. That farm the family lost during the Great Depression. My father had left home in 1924 to find work* for himself. After losing the farm, Grandpa and grandma lived with daughter Ida (Archer**) on a farm outside St. Charles. That's the first place I knew him. Somewhere there's a picture of him and some grandchildren, me among them, taken there in 1939. By the mid-40s, my grandparents were living with son George and d-i-l Esther on a farm at the outskirts of St. Charles. That's the place we visited in '77, and the place Joseph was living when he died. (He may have actually died in a hospital, but I doubt it. His death was sudden.) We were living in Dunlap, Illinois then (my parents, Bea and I). Joseph's buried in the Rosebud cemetery at Bonesteel, a town quite close to St. Charles. Theon and Leroy's ranch was just outside Bonesteel. Your grandpa first worked for a rancher somewhere in Nebraska. Then he took a job with Morrow Construction. He worked on the re-location of the Belle Fourche river in Scotts Bluff, NE. Then Morrow sent him to Southern Illinois to work on the railroad tunnel that we also visited in '77. The whole Archer branch of the family migrated to the San Fernando Valley in California in the 40s. My uncle, Joseph Jr., lives in Vernonia, Oregon. He has terminal cancer. My aunt Etta lives near him. They, along with my uncle Jim (Peoria) are the last of my father's siblings. -- By Charles Wuest. Sources: 1. | 12037 | ESchulz: Born: 1917 Gregory, Gregory County, South Dakota www.findagrave.com: www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=14500834 Dora Elizabeth Ackerman was born on December 8, 1916 to Eva (Wiest) and John Ackerman on their homestead south of Herrick, SD. She grew to adulthood on the family homestead and graduated from Herrick High School. On May 8, 1938 she was united in marriage to Roy Francis Zimmerman and to this union three children were born: Larry Lee, Ronald Roy, and Karen Kay. In the last year of her life, her memories were often of when the children were small. She would say, "I asked God for three healthy children and that is what he gave me. The sweetest moments of my life were when I held my babies." Roy and Dora began their married life on a farm south of Jamison NE and moved to a farm southwest of Herrick for a few years, before finally buying the land west of Herrick that they farmed until their retirement. They continued to live on the farm for many years and after Roy's death, Dora stayed alone on the farm until moving into Burke in 1998. Dora was the cook at the Herrick Grade School for several years until the school closed. She was always so happy when former students came back to tell her how good her meals had been. Dora loved to dance, and every Saturday night, she & Roy could be found at the Herrick dance hall with all their friends. She always said that she would rather dance than eat. During her lifetime, their home was always open to friends and family. Dora was known for her homemade bread, fried bread, cinnamon rolls, apple kugel, and at Christmas time her grandchildren and extended families enjoyed her Cannon Balls and Thumbprint Cookies. Her elderberry jelly was always a special treat that she would carefully wrap and bring in her suitcases when she traveled to Miami in the winter months. Dora was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Herrick; serving as a Sunday School Teacher, singing in the choir and active in Ladies Aid. Dora attended the Herrick Church until she moved into Burke and the drive down to Herrick at night became too hard for her. After the tornado took St. John's in 2002, she became a member of the Lutheran Church in Burke. In November, 2004 Dora moved to Miami to live with her daughter, Karen and son-in-law, Don. After a fall that injured her back, she resided in an assisted living facility and was always ready to take part in the activities. She was named Valentine Queen in February of this year and was very proud of that. She loved to show her "crown" to visitors. Altough she was content in Miami and wanted to remain close to family, she missed home and waited each week for the Burke Gazette so she could read about her hometown people. She always loved to read all the news. Through the years, many close friends who were not related by blood, knew Dora as "Grandma" and loved her dearly. Dora was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Roy, her son, Ronald, her parents, John & Eva Ackerman, and all of her siblings: Joseph, Adolph "Shorty", Rachel "Peg", Margaret, Elsie, Bertha, and John. She leaves many to celebrate and remember her life of 89 years, 5 months and 19 days including her children Larry Zimmerman and wife Jean, daughter-in-law, Gwen Zimmerman, daughter Karen and husband, Don Wallace, special niece Vervil Kracht, six grandchildren: Jason Beach, Damian, Nicholas, Ian, Colin and Sean Zimmerman, three step-grandchildren: Tonya Stromquist and husband Steve, James Flatebo and wife, Bernie, Travis Wallace and wife Whitney, and 6 great grandchildren: Abby & Eric Stomquist, Lyle, Teddy & Michael Flatebo, Nathaniel Wallace, and her adopted grandchildren in Miami, Javier Otero and his family as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends. Dora's life had been a simple one from childhood through her adult years and finally her senior years. So it was fitting that the Lord took her hand and led her home simply, quietly and peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2006. Burial will be in the Herrick Cemetery, Herrick. | Ackerman, Dora Elizabeth (I6122)
