Jack H. Zimpleman, Staff Sergeant 458th Bomb Group, served as a tail gunner on a B-24 Liberator based in England and was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster in March 1945. On April 9, 1945 his plane was shot down over Lechfeld, Germany. Two accounts are listed below:
"On April 9, 1944 the 458th BG flew their 222nd mission to the airfield at Lechfeld, Germany. On the bomb run, Final Approach, flown by 2Lt Leonard Abramowitz, suffered a direct flak hit almost simultaneously with bomb release. 2 Engine went on fire and A/C went into power dive in attempt to smother fire. One chute came out while in power glide, A/C circled to left then pilot seemed to lose control, three more chutes came out aircraft then went into a dive, one more chute came out before A/C broke up at 10,000 feet. "All crew members except for nose gunner Sgt Allen Rupp managed to bail out in time. According to the navigator, Lt John Holodak, he had just let Rupp out of the nose turret and the two were about to bail out when the plane blew up. At least one of the crew believes that Rupp never made it out of his turret. Holodak, Zeiler, and Freeman were wounded by flak, but received treatment on the ground and recovered. The crew was rounded up and spent the final weeks of the war as prisoners of the Germans."
Report by S/Sgt Elmer F. Grow, Waist Gunner. "This is a full account of what happened to the best of my knowledge… A few seconds after bombs away at the target, flak hit our No. 2 engine. We caught fire and were given orders to bail out. The tail gunner (Jack Zimpleman) and I went out the camera hatch. The right waist [gunner] was last to leave but we never saw him again. On hitting the ground, Wehrmacht troops captured me and took me to a nearby flak battery. There I seen, pilot who had slight burns, and tail gunner (Jack Zimpleman) who appeared OK. That night we were moved to a town and locked up for the night."

Note from Irememberu:
(Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Terry Rangers by J. K. P. Blackburn, 1919, page 21.)
… There was a man, Charles Howard by name, strong physically and mentally, brave as Julias Caesar and well educated, but with the way and manners of a frontiersman, with many peculiarities. He had belonged to Company F but got a transfer to Company C for some reason I don’t recall. He had gotten a nice laundered white shirt from the sutler’s store the night of the 6th of April. Next morning, the 7th, as the regiment was formed to move, some one reproved Howard for tucking his shirt back at the neck, exposing his breast which was one of his habits, telling him it was a shame to treat a nice shirt in that way. His reply was, “If I get shot in the breast today I don’t want the bullet to injure my biled shirt.” Pretty soon we were ordered to move out towards the enemy and ascertain their position, their probable number, etc., and report back to the commanding general. Our movement, which was only intended for a reconnaissance, drew the fire of the enemy’s picket, for advance in their forward movement had already begun, and one ball struck Howard in the breast a little below the collar bone, going through him and lodging in the muscles or shoulder blade in the back part of his shoulder, not touching his laundered shirt. A little later while we stood in column still headed towards the enemy Howard came riding along the column singing “Blue-eyed Mary,” a favorite song of his. As he neared me I said, “Which way, Charles, with your ‘Blue-eyed Mary’ this morning?” He replied, “To Texas, don’t you see my furlough?” pointing to the wound in his breast. He rode horseback to Corinth that day, about fifteen miles, applied for and obtained a furlough soon after, went to Texas and about five months later reported back to his company for duty again, sound as a dollar.

Friedrich Wilhelm Jäger was born in in the village of Holenberg (near Holzminden) in the Duchy of Braunschweig (Brunswick). He became qualified as a Master Tailor (Schneidermeister) and worked as such at Kloster Amelungsborn, a Protestant convent near Holenberg. With his wife, Charlotte Meyer, and five children, Friedrich emigrated from Bremen on the ship "Helene" on March 18, 1854, arrived at the port of Baltimore on May 9, and officially immigrated on May 10, 1854. The family then traveled to Wheeling and lived first at 98 (North) Main St., and then later in what today is the 26th block of either Main or Market St. below Wheeling Creek. As an American citizen he became known as Frederick William Yager. (He "naturalized" on the same day as August Warneke, who was to marry his daughter, Caroline Yager.)
After a few years of living in "downtown" Wheeling, Frederick bought some land, I think in the Leatherwood area and later moved to a farm in the Richland District (up the Bethany Pike, on the Waddington farm area later bought up for the Oglebay Estate). He died soon afterwards. I have extensive research: contact me if interested. See also my slides in "Sheeran Tree by Maryrose" at Ancestry.com.

Charlotte Meyer was born in 1805 in the tiny community of Wickensen, which is now part of Eschershausen (state of Lower Saxony). In 1805 Wickensen was in the Duchy of Brunswick (Herzogtum Braunschweig.) Her husband, Friedrich Jäger, came from the nearby village of Holenberg. They married in Eschershausen on 11 May 1828. Two of her seven children died when very young. Before emigrating from the port of Bremen, Charlotte, Friedrich and children resided at the cloister/convent of Amelungsborn. Her husband was a Master tailor, and as such , worked in this capacity for the convent personnel. Charlotte and family eventually emigrated and settled in Wheeling, WV. (See my slides in "Sheeran Tree by Maryrose" at Ancestry.com.)

The Times-Advocate (Escondido, California) Monday, September 10, 1945, Page 1:
John Steen, former Escondidan, grandfather of Mrs. W. F. White, passed away at Bellflower Friday. He was 84 years old and had been in failing health for the past two years. Mrs. White and family returned Monday morning from Bellflower where they visited the bereaved family.
From the History of the State of California and an extended history of its southern coast counties by James Miller Guinn, Volume 1, Page 672 and 673:
Since 1894 Mr. Steen has been known as one of the most enthusiastic citizens of Long Beach, coming here in that year as a contractor and builder, a line of endeavor for which he has every qualification, if his success during the past twelve years can be taken as a basis for this conclusion. On the paternal side he is of English descent, his father, John J. Steen, having been born in Nottingham, England, whence he immigrated to the United States, locating first in Brooklyn, NY, then in Baltimore, MD, and still later in Brookfield, VA. It was in the latter city that his marriage occurred, uniting him with Martha Brooks, who was a native of the Old Dominion. From Virginia Mr. Steen and his wife removed to Missouri, from there to Rushville, Ohio and finally to Iowa, the death of Mrs. Steen occurring in the latter state. For a number of years Mr. Steen was a merchant in that state, but is now in Alberta, Canada, where he has accumulated large property holdings.
John B. Steen was born in Paulville, Adair County, MO, November 14, 1860, and was well educated in the common schools of the various localities in which his parents settled during his boyhood years. As a trade upon which to depend for future years, he chose that of carpenter, although for some time he was well known as a farmer and stock raiser in Chambers, Holt County, Neb. Relinquishing his interests in Nebraska in 1894, he that year came to Long Beach and gave his attention to his trade, the city at that time being in great need of competent workmen. At first he made a specialty of shingling contracts, and he has the credit of completing more houses with shingle roofs than any other one person in Long Beach. Later he built houses on his own responsibility and sold them, in addition to executing contracts for complete buildings for others. He still owns six residences, besides valuable property on Second street and elsewhere in the city.
In Lewis, Cass County, Iowa, John B. Steen was united in marriage with Bertha F. Van Ornam, June 19, 1889. She is the daughter of Edward C.D. and Ann M. (Doolittle) Van Ornam, an account of whom will be found elsewhere in this volume. Three children have blessed the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Steen, as follows: Victor V., Verna D.M. and Vera F. Mrs. Steen is a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church of Long Beach.
