Freda Scheerer died Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Potter Ridge, Red Wing, where she was the first resident 5 ½ years ago.
Freda was born April 30, 1915, to Henry and Anna Marie (Steigman) Huber near Carson, North Dakota where she lived most of her life. She married August J. Scheerer November 17, 1935, at Emmaus Congregational United Church of Christ where she had also been baptized and confirmed. They farmed northwest of Carson where they raised Richard and Carol. In 1972 they moved into Carson where they lived until August's death in 1996.
Freda moved to Mason City, Iowa to be near Richard and then to Faribault, Minnesota in 2002. In 2005 she moved to Red Wing near her grandson, Ian, and was followed by Richard and Nancy. She loved to travel and made annual extended visits to Carol in Bend, Oregon and to see her extensive family. She was known for her strong and supportive spirit that was undergirded by her cooking, baking, hospitality and prayer. She and August rarely offered food that wasn't raised and processed by themselves and were often "home" to family members in difficult times.
She is survived by her children, Reverend Richard (Nancy) Scheerer of Red Wing and Carol Doran of Bend, OR and Red Wing; grandchildren, Ian (Natasha Yates) Scheerer of Red Wing and Angela (Tom) Kelly of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren, Jessica, David and Justin Scheerer and Jonah and Allison Kelly; brother, Robert Huber of Eagan, MN; sister, Vi Richardson of Mt. Vernon, WA; brother-in-laws, Alvin Scheerer of Auburn, IN and Glen Karow of Madison, WI; sister-in-laws, Roberta Huber of Portland, OR and Vi Huber of Vancouver, WA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August; an infant son; brothers, William, Albert, Edward, Herbert, Rudolph, Arnold, Calvin and Harold and sisters, Emma Wentworth and Esther Zimbelman.
Funeral service will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at the Emmaus Congregational Cemetery in Carson, North Dakota on Saturday, July 9, 2011 with a public visitation at the Carson Community Center at 2:30 p.m. with family present. Memorials preferred to First Presbyterian Church of Red Wing, the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, New Brighton, MN or the Emmaus Congregational Cemetery Fund, Carson, ND.
