He was an earnest supporter of the Established Church - the Communion silver now used at Old Abingdon, the parish of "Fairfield," was presented by Lewis Burwell, and has "L.B." engraved upon it. He was an influential member of the King's Council; "Fairfield," later known as "Carters Creek," was said to be the oldest house in VA bearing a date on its walls, the incription "L.B.A., 1694," was cut on one of the group of diamond-shaped chimneys, which shows that "Fairfield" was built by Hon. Lewis Burwell and his wife. [Col. Families]
Six of Major Lewis Burwell™s 15 children preceded him in death. In this time, a large number of children was expected and, llike the death of mothers, was accepted as the will of Providence.Nathanial Bacon™s will dated March 15, 1691-2 : Gives to œMajor Lewis Burwell all my lands lying and being in New Kent County to be managed sold and disposed of to the best advantage and the proper use and benefit of the said Lewis Burwells four daughters viz. Joanna, Elizabeth, Lucy and Martha now living.
œBy his death in 1710, the Burwells had forged instrumental alliances with members of the rich and powerful Armistead, Bacon, Bassett, Berkeley, Byrd, Carter, Cusis, Digges, Harrison, Lear, Ludwell, and Parke families.
Little is know about Lewis II. Presumably either his mother or the first of two stepfathers, William Bernard, a member of the colony™s council, arranged for Lewis™s schooling. [He] served as a trustee of the College of William anad Mary and tried to instill a love of learning in his sons. The eldest, Nathaniel, was in England in 1705, where he may have been sent for schooling. Lewis provided in his will for his two younger sons, James and Lewis, to get educations .. Major Lewis  Burwell immigrated with his mother and stepfather after 1626 when his father died. There is a possibility, and Keith, in his Ancestry of Benjamin Ancestry strongly suggests, that Lewis grandfather Edward Burwell, who died 19 Nov 1620 in England, was the Edward Burwell known to have been in the second supply to Jamestown in 1609, stating that  that he later returned to England. This has not been proved. Like all our early virginians, Major Burwell  took the title the local mlitary establishment in Virginia gave him. He died at Carter™s Creek Plantation, Gloucester County Va. He married Lucy Higginson.
Lewis Burwell I immigrated to Virginia in 1635. He œcame to the colony to stablish full claim to land rights he had inherited from his father. This Lewis did not live long enough to establish the family with the top ranks of the Virginia gentry. it was Lewis II, who survived into his early sixties, who successfully developed the lands his father had claimed, as well as adding several thousand more acres and dozens of enslaved workers to the family estate. By 1700 the family had extensive landholdsi n and by 1720, the Kingsmill property. œIn 1775 Lewis Burwell IV moved to Mecklenburg, taking his black and white family together to Botetourt Court, and by 1782 he had 62 of his 172 slaves housed there. Another source indicates he came to the Colony in 1640 and is the progenitor of the family in VA. In 1647 he was a member of the deputation sent to invite Charles II to come to VA. He served as Sergeant Major of Militia. Second son of 6 children., , ,

The Burwell family of VA is one of the oldest as well as the most widely connected families of the Old Dominion; they are descended from the ancient family of Burwell, of Bedford and Northampton Counties, England, and thru the maternal side of the hosue trace their ancestry to John Bedell, of "Woolaston," Northhampton Co., England, who died in the 15th century, and with whom the pedigree in "Camden's Visitation" starts. [Colonial Families]. Edward was one of the grantees under the Charter of 1609 from James I.
Edward œhad been an early investor in the Virginia Company of London, the joint-stock company that financed the Jamestown settlement.
The will of Edward Burwell, taken on his death bed, œdesired his sister Sheafe to take his eldest daughter, and keep her as servant, and his sister Wingate to take his daughter Elizabeth..his brother Wingate to be overseer, and with him his brother Henry Beadles (sic) and Mr. Edward Blofield.

BY a deed dated July 28, 1648, found by W. G. Stanard among the records of York County, Va., Dorothy Wingate, relict of Roger Wingate, Treasurer of Virginia, conveyed to "her well-beloved son Lewis Burwell" all rents due at said Roger's decease, and confirmed to her by the King..the paternal line of Dorothy, the mother of the first Lewis Burwell, can be traced to a John Bedell of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, who died in 1485, with whom the pedigree in Camden's Visitation starts. The inquisition mentions several sons of William Bedell, besides Silvester, his heir, who alone is mentioned in the Visitation, and, among them, Henry Bedell, who is called "brother" in Edward Burwell's will; and the name of the last wife of William was Elizabeth, the Visitation calling his wife Bridget Power of Northamptonshire.

The Burwell family was of very ancient date on the borders of England and Scotland, particularly in that region known as the Eastern Marches. The name appears in early records as Baralle, Barel, Burwell and Burrell, in which last form it appears in the records of the reign of Richard II [Betty Warder's notes]. The antiquarian, Cole, said that the family first settled at Colton Hall in Buddington, Hoven Hundred, and afterwards moved to Rougham, Theodister Hundred.
