WILLIAM MARVIN WIEST PH.D. was born on May 8, 1933 in Loveland, Colorado,and was raised in Reedley, California. He is a college professor and apsychologist. Willia m has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and biology from TaborCollege in Hillsboro, K ansas, and graduated surnrna cum laude in 1955; a Master of Arts degreein psychology fro m the University of Kansas in 1957; and a Ph.D. in psychology in 1962from the Universit y of California, Berkeley. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and SigmaXi, and has been the project Coordinator of World Health Organization (WHO),performing multinational res earch on new methods of contraception for men.
William has received many honors and awards including: the SloanFoundation Faculty Research Fellowship in 1972-73, and National Science FoundationFaculty Science Fellowship in 1975-76. He has also been published in severalpsychological journals. William's current research aftempts to extend the experimentaland theoretical analy sis of social behavior to complex human social behavior in naturalisticfield settings. I n the laffer context, he is studying human attitudes and behavior withrespect to sexuality, to f amily planning (deciding on a preferred family size), to factorsdetermining the acceptabi lity of different contraceptives, and to general issues of personalhealth risk management . Another line of research recently undertaken concerns identifying socialpsychological and personal history predictors of the decision to immigrate to Germany bymembers of the ethnic German population in the former Soviet Union.

My own family research (William Marvin Wiest) indicates thatour Wiest forebears left for Russia in about 1830 from somewhere in southern Germany perhaps nearGermerscheim in Rheinland-Pfalz, or from Wuerttemberg They were among thoseresponding to an earlier invitation by Catherine the Great, Czarina of Russia,for Germans and other western Europeans to settle in Russia. My grandfather,Friedrich Karl Wiest cam e to the United States (Colorado) in 1908 from one of severalhundred German settlements in Russia and Ukraine. The village he left fromwas Friedrichsfeld, near Stavropol in the North Caucasus of Russia, though he had beenborn in the German village of Rohrbach near Odessa, Ukraine. One sister,Elizabeth Wiest Croissant a lso emigrated to North America; she and her family settled in anarea near Medicine Hat, Albeita. Most of my grandfather Wiest's brothers and sisters(Konrad, Wilhelm, Jakob, Edward, Katerina, and Filbiena) stayed in Russia.
Unfortunately, during the early period of the Stalin regime,our family in North America lost all contact with our family in Russia. In 1928,my grandfather was a sked by his brothers and sisters there to not send letters orpackages; such communication from abroad created political troubles for them. Sixty yearslater, in 1988, I ha d the good fortune of finding our remaining Wiest family in Russiaand Kazakhstan. You may know that almost all ethnic Germans in Russia and Ukrainewere exiled from their homes in 1941, and sent to forced labor camps inSiberia and in central Asia. How any of them managed to survive is a marvelous story initself. For now I'l l say that I've discovered many of my Wiest relatives (firstcousins of my father, and their offspring) scattered widely over the former Soviet Union,from Khabarovsk to Moscow and from Murmansk to Tashkent. Now there is a great movementby many of them who hope to be able to resettle in Germany as 'Aussiedler."

He was known as a very successful farmer in the San Joaquin Valley of California. First he began farming near Johnstown, Colorado (Weld County) and in 1935 moved with his wife and two children to Fresno County, California (Reedley area). There he and his wife, Katherine (Buxman) Wiest bought a 20 acre farm, planted with Thompson seedless grapes (for raison making) on East Springfield Ave., where he farmed while also working out for wages. In 1943 they bought a 60 acre farm (mostly open land, but planted with 8 acres of peaches) on Dinuba and Porter Avenues, east of reedley, next to Smith Mountain. There he established a large dairy farm (milking up to 140 cows) and (with Darnell) marketed bottled, pasteurized milk under the lable, "Wiest-Darnell Dairy" to retail outlets in Reedley, Dinuba, and Orange Cove. Later the dairy was gradually converted to a peach and nectarine farm, and later he marketed his fruit to Los Angeles and San Francisco under the label, "WWW" for William Walter Wiest. In his last years of
work he was a much valued employee of George Brothers of Sultana where he worked as an intermediary (farmer relations expert) between this large grower/packer company and many fruit individual farmers. The following quoted comments about William W. Wiest were written Sept. 4, 1992 in a letter by his son, William M. to his own children, Bill
III, Suzanne, and Cynthia--all grandchildren of W.W.Wiest. "It's times like this when a person really wants to be close to loved ones. I so much valued the talking times with each of you recently. All of us knew Grandpa was dying and yet, after the fact, it's been harder for me than I expected. I've had a lot of tears of sadness following his death; I guess it's the realization that never again on earth will I get to hear his voice, feel his embrace, and talk to him. But I comfort myself in the knowledge that he had a very long and good life (with much evidence of his whole family's love for him), and that he is now at peace. His death reminds us that we are all heading that way too someday--we hope following a life as rich in love and personal fullfillment as his was." "Grandpa was really a very special and loving man and his caring for all
of us in the family was boundless. He was also one of the unique ones in his generation in seeing that family should be defined very broadly to include all people everywhere. He and I were different in many ways (aren't we all?) yet we always loved and respected each other very deeply. I've learned so much of great value from him in my life, and I
hope we can all carry on his beautiful way of living--his optimism, cheerful and encouraging spirit, compassion, generosity, faith, and genuine concern for the well-being of others. There's so much more to say, but for now I'm needing to be brief." He died at 8:30 p.m. on Friday evening, August 21, 1992, in the Pleasant View Manor in Reedley, having
spent the last hours of his life in the loving presence of his wife, Katherine, and his oldest daughter, Adena. I (Bill M.) boarded a plane in Portland at 8:15 p.m. and learned of his death on arriving in Berkeley to spend the night with niece, Vivian and her husband, Pat McCarthy."

But instead of attending college, she married and became an inspiration for learning par excellance to her four children. The following information from Mrs. John Lesser, via Robert Croissant, 704 Collingswood, Fort Collins, CO 80524, phone (303) 493-4047: F.C. Wiest came to the U.S. on June 6, 1908; he was the son of Karl Wiest. Peter Wiest (Clara vetter;s father) was the son of Gottlieb Wiest, and Gottlieb was F.C. Wiest's Uncle, and Karl Wiest was Peter's Uncle.
[comment by WMWiest: This construction would make F.C. Wiest and Peter Wiest first cousins, since their fathers, Karl and Gottlieb, would be brothers, but my grandpa, F.C. Children of Karl and Elizabeth Wiest are (1/5/89) tentatively identified as: Konrad, Wilhelm, Elizabeth, Friedrich, Jacob, Katherina, Filbiena, and Edward. Date of death of Elizabeth Wiest was reported by her granddaughter, Margaret Dekker (of Kustanai, Kazakhstan) in a 22 May 1989 letter to W.W. and K.E. Wiest (my mother and father). She was said to have lived with her son Konrad at that time (place unspecified but probably Friedrichsfeld, since the family didn't leave there until later), and Margaret remembers that she and her parents lived nearby at that time. In a March 1989 letter, Margaret Dekker also says that we are related to Rudolf Wiest through her grandfather, Karl; i.e., "I am 4th cousin to Rudolf's father." Likewise, she is 4th cousin to Albina Root. In Olinda Weitzel's letter of 30 Jan. 1992 she says she believes our Wiest forbearers came to Russia around 1858-1860, but she doesn't know for sure.

(RIN 7) has always referred to as her great grandfather--i.e., the father of her grandfather, Georg Peter Buxmann, b. 1838, the latter called "Peter Buxmann" in the family.

ABT 1774 Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov, 29 July, 1996, gives all Buxmanns (written as Buksmann in Russian transliteration) from the colony of Mueller for the censuses of 1834, 12.10.1850, and 23.01.1858. Andreas Buxman (named as "Johann Andreas Buxmann" is shown as 23.5, 39.5, and 47 years old at the 1834, 1850 and 1858 censuses, and his wife is shown as Gertrude. David Schmidt of Martinez, CA, remarked in a letter of 13 August, 1996, that "Volga Germans were usually called by only one of their names (Rufname) and the Rufname was usually the second name (examples: Johann Andreas = Andreas; Georg Peter = Peter)." In a note of 13 August, 1996 David Schmidt notes further that the 1798 census of Mueller shows two sons of Johann Georg Buxman, one named Johannes (age 24 in 1798) and the other, also named Johannes (aged 22 in 1798). Which of the two sons of Johann Georg named Johannes is the father of the two brothers, Georg Buxmann (age 30 in 1834, therefore born abt 1804), and Andreas Buxmann (age 28 in 1834, therefore born abt 1806), as well as of the three more brothers, George Martin, born ABT 1809, JOHANN ANDREAS, age 23.5 in 1834 and therefore born ABT 1811,

According to data from Pleve in 1993 the Johannes born in 1774 married Anna Barbara Keil, who was born in 1771. The younger Johannes, born in 1776, is not shown as married in Pleve's initial report. Therefore, a tentative judgment is that the older Johannes Buxmann (b. 1774) is the father of the 2 = 3 = 5 sons.
Additional information is from Ezra Buxman of Greeley, Colorado about his father, Henry, and grandfather, Peter, and great grandfather, Andrew (Andreas). Andrew is said to have died at age 67 and 7 weeks later his wife, Gertrude, died.

On 30 March, 1966 Professor Igor Pleve emailed the following: ". . . .the roots of Catherina Helfenbein begin from Johannes Helfenbein, born in 1735 and Susanna, born in 1736. They came to Russia on the ship "Citadel" on 13.09.1766 and settled firstly in the Stephan colony. We can say exactly that this family left the Stephan
colony for another one before 1788 and Catherina herself was born in some other colony. If we can find it out we shall tell you additionally. . . . . Hope that you are alright, Igor and Ljudmila Pleve"
Thus, since Catherina was born in 1844 (1844 - 1735 = 109) it would appear there may be 4-5 generations separating Catherina from the first Helfenbeins to come to Russia.
Additional information from Ezra Buxman of Greeley, Colorado. Katerina Helfenbein with her parents, Fred and ? Helfenbein, moved to the state (province) of Samara, to the village of WiesenmFuller (about 35 miles from the Volga) while they were still young.

According to data from Professor Pleve in 1993 the Johannes born in 1774 married Anna Barbara Keil, who was born in 1771.
