    Carl F. Carlson, 84, of Vermillion, SD passed away Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital.
    Carl Carlson was born on March 12, 1931 to Lloyd and Emma (Welfl) Carlson in Burke, SD. He graduated from Burke High School in 1950 and attended Mechanical School in Fargo, ND. He enlisted in the Army in April of 1952. He served in the Korean War, being honorably discharged in April, 1954. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal.
    He was united in marriage to Erna Mae Frank on May 15, 1955. He worked for a rancher near Chamberlain, SD for nine years. During that time they had three children. They moved to the Vermillion area in 1962. Later he started raising hogs, farming and also worked for the South Dakota State Geological Survey.
    They retired from farming and moved into Vermillion in 1995, where Carl worked part-time at a car wash for a few years.
    Carl was a life long member of the American Legion. He was also a life long member of the VFW, serving as post-commander and was a member of the Honor Guard for 40 years. Carl was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational for over 50 years.
    For pastimes, Carl enjoyed fishing and camping. He and Erna were members of the Clay County Ramblers camping group for almost 20 years and they enjoyed many campfire stories, card games and bean-bag games. His best camping memory was the six-week trip he and Erna took to Alaska in 2001 with two of his siblings and their spouses. He also appreciated swapping stories with his coffee buddies.
    Carl had so much pleasure spending time with his five grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
    Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Erna of Vermillion, his children, Mike (Kathy) Carlson of Vermillion, Diane (Brian) Phelps of Jenks, OK, and Julie (Mark) Zweep of Sioux Falls; five grand children and two great-grand-children; siblings Lowell of Chamberlain, SD, Bob (Lana) of Norfolk, NE, Emily (Keith) Larsen of Bellevue, NE, Lloyd (Carol) of Rayville, MO and JoAnn Tieken of Omaha, NE.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Everett and Harlan and his sister Marilyn.

    Carl heiratete Frank, Erna Mae am 15 Mai 1955 in Burke, Gregory County, South Dakota, USA.
