Richard Oakley, age 80, of Huron and formerly of Miller, SD, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His funeral was Friday, October 16, 2015 at St. Lawrence Community Church in St. Lawrence with burial at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller.
Dick was born October 23, 1934 to Dunbar and Mabel (Kammerdiner) in Miller, SD. He was the youngest of five children. He attended St. Lawrence School where he enjoyed playing basketball.
Dick was an honest, hardworking man who took a lot of pride in everything he did, whether he was raising his family or raising cattle. He felt if anything was worth doing, it was worth doing right. He was a man of few words but also a bit of a jokester. He loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed being a Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. They were the topic of many conversations between him and his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed playing cards with his neighbors on the farm and later with his coffee buddies in Huron.
He married his first love, Marjorie June Fischer on June 2, 1954. They made their home on the farm north of Miller. Their 37 years together were spent raising 6 children. They built their life around milking cows, farming, attending their kids various sporting events and spending time with friends and family, which was his most prized possession. Dick’s joys and heartaches of his life on the farm were deeply engrained in his heart and never far from his memory, in fact, just last week he proudly proclaimed, “We finally got the hay put up!”
On May 22, 1992 Dick married the second love of his life, Glenda Gogolin. They enjoyed woodworking together and loved to surprise their family on Christmas with their latest creations…roll top desks, hope chests, cabinets, birdhouses, and the list goes on and on. These items now adorn the homes of his loved ones. They enjoyed their time with children and grandchildren celebrating special events, birthdays and holidays. Glenda was a faithful and loving wife the past 23 years, very few days passed in the last 7 years that she was not at the nursing home sharing her life with Dick. He was baptized and confirmed in faith at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, SD on November 23, 2002. Dick was rich in blessings that money cannot buy.
