    Gerald was born on April 10, 1923, in Lac qui Parle County, MN, the son of Arthur and Ruth (Schmidt) Oehler. He and his parents lived in Minnesota for one year before moving to South Dakota. Gerald was baptized on May 19, 1923, and confirmed on July 18, 1937, in St. John's Lutheran Church in Alban Township, Grant County, SD. He attended Alban #1 country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Ortonville High School in Ortonville, MN, in 1942. During his high school years he was active in football, basketball, track, music, drama, and Future Farmers of America (FFA). He received the highest award in FFA, the American Farmer degree, in 1942.
    Gerald was united in marriage to Delores Christian on December 31, 1944, in Milbank. Following marriage, the couple resided in Alban Township where they owned and operated a dairy farm. Jerry retired in 1994.
    He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank where he taught Sunday school for several years, sang in the choir, served on several church boards, and served as an usher for sixty plus years. Gerald was very concerned about water and soil conservation. He received the county conservation award in 1977. Jerry was the first in northeast SD to use strip grazing and was recognized for this innovation in Hoard's Dairyman. He served on the Grant County A.S.C.S. committee for ten years, several of those years as chairman, and on the American Dairy Association Board of SD for twelve years, five of those years as chairman. He also served on the State Veterinary Examining Board for six years, two of those years as vice chairman. Jerry was a 4-H Leader for twelve years. He also served on the local and state Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) Board, the Northeast SD and state Holstein Association as a director, the Community Oil Company Board in Milbank for eleven years, three of those years as chairman, and on Senator Larry Pressler's Agriculture Advisory Board.
    Gerald enjoyed hunting, card playing, acquiring collector edition model tractors, and drinking coffee with his friends.
    Survivors include his four children: Roger Oehler and wife Mary, Ortonville, MN; Jeanne Tietjen and husband Larry, rural Stockholm, SD; Sheila Tschakert and husband Frank, Florence, SD; and Craig Oehler and wife Lori, Sioux Falls, SD; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Muriel Bunting, Owasso, Oklahoma, and Jeannette Ceser and husband Richard, Sun City, AZ; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Kevin, and brothers, Donald and Raymond Oehler.
    Funeral services for Gerald William Oehler, age 83, of Milbank, will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2006, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. The Reverend James L. Wiese will officiate. Jerry died on Thursday, September 21st, at the Milbank Area Hospital/Avera Health. Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 10:00 a.m. Monday to attend services. The organist will be Gail Selgeby and the soloist will be Larry Tietjen. Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Sunday from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue in the church on Monday one hour before services. Pallbearers will be grandchildren: Chad Oehler, Dustin Oehler, Kyra Tietjen, Ty Tietjen, Shane Tietjen, and Tiffany Tschakert. Burial will be in the Milbank City Cemetery.

    Mrs. Delores Oehler, age 85, of Milbank passed away January 6, 2013, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
    Funeral services will be Friday, January 11th at 2:00 p.m. at Mundwiler Funeral Home. Rev. Craig Werling will officiate and burial will be in the Milbank Cemetery.
    Visitation will be Thursday at Mundwiler Funeral Home from 5 – 7 p.m. and continue Friday, one hour prior to the service.
    Casket bearers will be: Ty Tietjen, Shane Tietjen, Chad Oehler, Dustin Oehler, Kyra Hansen, and Tiffany Tschakert.
    Delores Doris Christian was born December 24, 1927, on the family farm south of Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of Christ and Rose (Damerow) Christian. Delores was baptized on January 24, 1928, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Milbank, and confirmed in April of 1943. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church for 65 plus years.
    Delores attended rural school at Alban #3, Grant County and attended Milbank High School for two years. She earned her GED in 1973. She was united in marriage with Gerald Oehler on December 31, 1944, at Emanuel Lutheran Church. The couple farmed together for 46 years in Alban Township.
    Delores was a 4-H member in her growing years and a 4-H leader for 24 years. Delores was a member of the Jolly Madison Extension Club for 49 years, serving as an officer for the club, county, and district levels. She served as a state officer for the South Dakota Holstein Association and served on the Alban School Board. Delores enjoyed sewing all her life. She did a lot of sewing for others, as well as enjoyed the relaxation it gave her. Delores was an avid gardener with a "green thumb." She raised a huge garden on the farm, canning and preserving the food for winter. Delores took special pride and delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Delores was united in marriage on June 7, 1992, with Lyle Jay Haglund in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived in Adrian, MN and in Milbank. They later lived on Big Stone Lake. They attended American Lutheran Church in Milbank.
    Delores is survived by four children: Roger (Mary) Oehler of Ortonville, MN; Jeanne (Larry) Tietjen of Stockholm, SD; Sheila (Frank) Tschakert of Florence, SD; and Craig (Lori) Oehler of Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister Phyllis Henze of Milbank, SD; one brother Jim Christian of Milbank, SD; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and other relatives and friends.
    Delores was preceded in death by her parents, one son Kevin Oehler, three grandchildren; husbands; one brother-in-law Orland Henze.

    Christ Christian, 71, former state official and prominent Grant county and Milbank resident, died Saturday at St. Bernard hospital. He had been ill for several years with cancer and had been hospitalized since mid-October.
    A retired Alban township farmer, he was a former member of the State Game, Fish and Parks commission, on which he served from 1955 to 1965. He served two terms at state senator from Grant county, from 1931 until 1935.
    Baptized Christian Wilhelm Johann Christian, he was the son of Gerhard and Bertha (Weberman) Christians. He was born Sept. 15, 1895 at Bunker, Ill., and came to this state with his parents in 1906. They lived near Corona for three years and then moved to a farm near Milbank. He attended the Corona and Willow Bend schools.
    He was baptized in the Lutheran faith Oct. 13, 1895 and confirmed on March 16, 1913. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran congregation of this city. During World War I, he enlisted in the Army on April 26, 1918, and received his discharge July 9, 1919 at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
    He married Rose Lillie Damerow at Milbank on March 10, 1921. They lived in Vernon, Grant Center and Alban townships, their last farm home being located about a mile and a half south of Milbank, where they developed an outstanding farmstead before retiring in 1958 and moving to the new home they built in this city on S. Main Street.
    They were the parents of three children, a son and two daughters.
    Mr. Christian was a member of the American Legion and VFW posts and the Milbank Commerce & Community club. He was a director of the Federal Land Bank and a member of the Milbank Rod and Gun club.
    While serving as a Game commissioner, he actively promoted this section of the state and helped to arrange for the planting of antelope in this area. It was while he was serving on the commission that he became the victim of a throat cancer and underwent surgery which caused him to lose the faculty of his speech. Mr. Christian was active in the Democrat party for many years and was always interested in promoting worthwhile causes and working for community betterment.
    He is survived by his wife; one son, Jimmy, and two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Delores) Oehler and Mrs. Orland (Phyllis) Henze, all of Milbank; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Wilbert, of Ligerwood, N.D., and Harry, Twin Brooks; a half-brother, George, of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Helen) Michaelson, Hinckley, Ill., and Mrs. Homer (Anna) Strangelway, Rochester, Minn., and a brother-in-law, Oscar Scherff, of Milbank.
    He preceded in death by a granddaughter, his parents, three brothers, and a half-sister, Mrs. Christina Scherff, of Milbank.
    The funeral was conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the Emmanuel Lutheran church by the pastor, Rev. Curtis Scheicher. Burial was made in the Milbank cemetery.
    Honorary pallbearers were Dell Dawson, Aberdeen; Oliver Hiesmeyer, of Estelline; Tom Skoog, Louis Mertens, Bill Fitzgerald and Erwin Hoffman. Serving as pallbearers were Jack Van Ray, Marwood Ebert, Dennis Skoog, Floyd Dailie, James Mertens, and Wayne Ells.
