    John Raymond Eckert, 50, died Wednesday morning at his home, 128 Louise. He was born March 23, 1902, in Arrington, Kan., and attended the Arrington School and the Valley Falls High School. He moved to Topeka in 1921 and was employed in a grocery store until he became ill 10 months ago.
    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Eckert of the home; a daughter, Miss Phyllis Eckert, Goodland; and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Wright, Larkinburg, Kan., and Mrs. Julia Hinman, Holton. The funeral will be at 10 a. m. Friday at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary with burial in Denison, Kan., cemetery.

    John S. Eckert, 74, native son of Atchison county, died Saturday afternoon at his home in Arrington with heart trouble after a serious illness which lasted a month. An attack of flu last winter left him weakened.
    John Sanford Eckert was born February 6, 1866, on the farm about two miles southeast of Arrington and on February 14, 1894, he married Miss Catherine Cruise. He spent all his life in the Arrington community and his death is a real loss. He was a devoted husband and father, a loyal citizen and neighbor, and a real friend.
    He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Glen Wright of Arrington, Mrs. Ray Hinman of Denison, Mrs. Joe Coupe of Topeka and John Eckert of Topeka. Also surviving are one brother, Jacob Eckert of Arrington, and eight grandchildren.
    The rosary was recited at the home Sunday evening, and funeral services were at St. Ann's Catholic church at Effingham this morning.

    Mrs. Katie Eckert, 76, whose funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann's church, Effingham, of which she was a life-long member, was born near Monrovia on March 9, 1875, a daughter of Richard and Honora Cruise, and moved with her parents to the Arrington community when a small child. She was married to John S. Eckert Feb. 14, 1894. He preceded her in death 11 years ago. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Grace Wright, Larkinburg, Mrs. Julia Hinman, Holton, and John R. Eckert, Topeka; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Gettings, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Agnes Ward, Topeka, and Arthur Cruise, Montebello, Calif. A daughter, Mrs. Gladys Coupe of Effingham, four brothers and six sisters preceded her in death.

    Jacob Eckert Sr. was born in Prussia, Germany, Feb. 14, 1830, and died May 20, 1905. When a boy of nineteen, he moved with his parents to America, locating at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Having remained there for three years, he came to Kansas and located on a farm in Atchison County, where he lived for forty-two years. In June 1901, retiring from farm life, he moved to Arrington, Kansas where his closing years were spent.
    He was married to Julia Ann Gliem on December 14, 1858. To them were born five children, two sons and three daughters, all of whom survive their father.
    Mr. Eckert was a good citizen and neighbor. For thirty-six years he was a member of the Church of Christ.
    Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday May 21, after which the body was taken to Muscotah for internment.

    Julia was born in Saxony, Germany. At the age of nine, she came to America with her parents, Johannes "John" W. Gliem and Christina Schaeffer-Gliem. Julia was the oldest daughter out of eight children born to the Gliem family: Adam (B. 1843 - D. 1851); Elizabeth (B. Jan. 12, 1845); Margarethe (B. Mar. 6, 1848); Phoebe (B. Jan. 21, 1853); Sarah (B. Nov. 18, 1855); Christina (B. Mar. 12, 1859); & Louisa (B. May 1861). In 1851, the Gliem family came to America and settled on a farm in Des Moines, IA (Terr.). In the Spring of 1857, the family drove a team of oxen to Kansas where they preempted a claim and purchased a farm located one-half mile east of Arrington.
    Julia married Jacob Eckert (B. Feb. 14, 1830 - D. May 20, 1905) on December 14, 1858, in Kansas. Julia bore five children. The childrens' names: Anna Louisa (B. Aug. 18, 1859), Mary Frances (B. Sept. 2, 1860), Margaret Jane (B. Sept. 3, 1864 - D. 1917), John Sanford (B. Feb. 6, 1866), Jacob William (B. Mar. 6, 1869 - D. Oct. 7, 1942).
    "Grandma Eckert," as she was known to her friends, was kindhearted sympathetic woman. She was ever ready to assist her neighbors in times of sickness, and in many instances took place of a physician. There are 25 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren making at total of 88 direct living descendents. Julia died at the age of 89. She is buried at Muscotah cemetary.

    Richard Cruise, age 73 years, one of the old settlers of this community, died at his home in Horton Monday evening. It was a sudden death. Mr. Cruise had eaten his supper and as he left the table was stricken and died in a few moments. The remains were brought to Effingham and buried in the Catholic cemetery Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted by Father Fabian saying mass and the sermon was preached by Father Hildebrand, of Horton. Mr. Cruise was born in Ireland and moved to this community in 1861 where he has always made his home until three years ago when he went to California on account of failing health. Mrs. Cruise died in Los Angeles, California, June 22, 1906 and the remains were brought to Effingham for burial. After his return Mr. Cruise purchased property in Horton and has lived there with a daughter ever since. He was the father of 14 children, 13 of whom are living. He was an excellent citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all. A large congregation attended the funeral at St. Ann's church.

    John W. Gliem, a well-known farmer of the Arrington neighborhood, died on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1899, and was buried yesterday at the Muscotah Cemetery.
    Mr. Gliem was born Dec. 5, 1817 in Saxe Weimar, Germany. He was married to Christena Schaeffer in Germany in 1841. Mrs. Gliem preceded him in death in 1895 (sic 1896).
    The Gliem family came to America with a large group of german immigrants. They landed in New Orleans and came up the Missippi (sic Mississippi) to Fort Des Moines, Iowa territory in 1850. They lived in that area until 1857 when the men purchased farm land at a land sale held in Ozawkie. Their land was located in the Arrington area.
    John Gliem was one of the oldest citizens of Arrington, being 83 years of age and having spent most of his life on that farm place.
    Mr. Gliem leaves seven married daughters to mourn him; Julia Eckert, Elizabeth Fassnacht, Margert Schiffbauer, Phebe Aikins, Sarah Hamon, Christine Lewis, and Louisa Aikins. Also several great grandchildren and also grandchildren. His nephew Ferdinand Gliem survives him. The latter is well known in Atchison having assisted in the County Clerk's office. He was also conspicuous last summer as a candidate for register of Deeds before the Republican Convention.
    A brother who accompanied John to America was Matthias Gliem, (born 1830-Germany), and brother Alfred Gliem (born in 1828 in Germany) remained in Iowa when John and Matthias came to Kansas.
    Rev. Nufer conducted the services at the Muscotah cemetery.

    Christina was born in Saxe Weimar by Isnacht, Germany. She married to Johannes "John" W. Gliem in 1841, and immigrated to America in 1850. Christina bore eight children: Julia Ann (B. Dec. 12, 1841 - D. Mar. 2, 1931) Adam (B. 1843 - D. 1851); Elizabeth (B. Jan. 12, 1845); Margarethe (B. Mar. 6, 1848); Phoebe (B. Jan. 21, 1853); Sarah (B. Nov. 18, 1855); Christina (B. In the spring of 1857, the family drove a team of oxen to Kansas where they preempted a claim and purchased a farm located one-half mile east of Arrington. Gliem family purchased the farm land at a sale held in Ozawskie, KS.
    Christina was injured when she was about 50 year old. She was thrown from a wagon when the horses bolted and she had a fractured pelvis. She remained in bed all that winter. She was handicapped and walked with cane the rest of her life.
    During late years of life, she longed for her release and as she wished, death icy fingers touched her while she slept, and her slumber became the long last dreamless sleep. She passed away on Friday morning at three o' clock and thirty minutes, Feb. 26, 1896, aged 78 years, 6 months and two days. Twenty-six great grandchildren, thiry-seven grandchildren, seven daughters, and her husband are left to mourn. Our loss is her gain, and we would not, if we could, call her back to this world of pain and sorrow.
