Grandma has told me so many stories over the years. I wish I wouldhave had the forethought to write them all down as she told them. Sheloves talking about her parents and she had so much respect for them. Her memories of her parents are not spectacular, they were ordinary farmpeople who raised a large family. She remembers her mother lifting herto pick cherries because she was to small to reach them. Her mothercalled her, her little Goldie. When she speaks of her parents you canfeel the love she had for them. One of her favorite stories to tell ishow she used to go do the house work and make the bread for her AuntMartha. Her daddy would see Uncle Charlie coming up the lane and hewould say " Goldie her comes Charlie, Mattie must have the grunts again",Grandma would go off with Charlie Jones and knead the bread, Mattie wouldcall her to bedside and have her bring a basin of water and a towel,Mattie would touch the bread dough and then tell Goldie to knead it somemore it wasn't soft enough. Grandma's bread still bring backs fondmemories. As an adult I would still ask her to make some bread andvegetable soup for me or bread and slippery pot pie. She likes to cometo my house and sit on the deck, my view is not spectacular but she likesit. When she would come I would get her to make slippery pot pie forsupper. She would talk about her chores at home when she was a child "My job at home was to gather the eggs, crack the corn, feed the chickensand clean the coop. I guess I was very good at it because my mum gave methat job to do all the time." Grandma left school to help on the farmand on neighboring farms.
Her generation would have to give any money they earned to theirparents.
One of my first real memories of my Grandma is when we moved herefrom Cheyenne, Wyoming. We stayed with Grandma and Grandpap for a fewweeks. It was my first experience with an outhouse, of course that wasa real treat. "HA". They lived on a small farm with cows, pigs andchickens. In Wyoming we lived near horse ranches. I had never had freshmilk before so the idea of getting the milk into the bucket from the cowand then drinking it was a big turn off. I don't drink milk to thisday. We used to live next to a chicken processing plant in Wyoming, thechickens were in big buildings so we could only hear them. I was notprepared for chickens running all over the yard pooping everywhere. Wehad to always watch our step when we walked out the back door. And whenwe had fried chicken Grandma didn't pull it out of the freezer or gettake out. She would chase one of those chickens catch it by the legstake it over to the big stump and grab the ax. Presto, fried chicken, well not that easy because first you had to pull its feathers and pintails out. A real pleasant job reserved for the kids. I still smile whenI think of those days, but I try not to breathe to deeply , what fun wehad. We would get up early in the morning go out into the garden find abig yellow tomato and bring it in, put some bread in the toaster and haveour tomato sandwich for breakfast. Grandma had a new bathroom upstairsbut it was reserved for night time use, so the out house was still themost used. We even took our baths in a big metal tub in the summerkitchen. That kitchen is still etched into my memory. It was so largeand cool it had a big freezer next to a wall of floor to ceiling cabinetspainted green, the sink still had the hand pump and the wood stove wherethey heated the water for our baths was on the opposite side of thesink.
At the other end of the house was the parlor room with a big piano, weweren't allowed in there very often. There was no television, we playedoutside until dark and then we would go to bed. I really don't rememberbeing bored at Grandma's house.

He thenwas stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and was severely injured in lateearly 1980's causing a disability. Gary could only be contacted throughthe Veterans Administration when an emergency occurred. On January 3,Melissa his 28 year old daughter was killed in an automobile accident. In trying to inform him I was told that her had passed away in August2003. He had problems with seizures and was not supposed to drinkachohol. He had a drinking problem and would not take his medicine forthe seizures. He died between August 5 and the 15th. Since the mail hadnot been removed from his mail box from the 5th through the 15th, heprobaly died around the 5th. No autopsy could be performed andidentification was based soley on the word of a bartender who had knownGary for several years. Many messages were sent via email and everyonethat wrote said that he was a very sad man and that his drinking andseizures were a daily part of his life. he had been robbed several timesso there was nothing in his home or wallet to indicate he had famliy. Hewas cremated August 15th and this is the official date on his deathcertificate.
