The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Frey, who died from trichinosis in Woodburn, Oregon, arrived in Lodi on the 11 o'clock train yesterday forenoon. the remains are at the chapel of O. H. Wells and the funeral will be held this morning at 9:30 from the German Baptist Church, corner of Oak and Garfield streets. Rev. Mengedoth will officiate, and interment will be made in Lodi Cemetery.
Ed Nies, a brother of the woman who met such an untimely death, accompanied the remains, while Mrs. Adolph Bechthold, sister to Mrs. Frey, remained with the children.
There are two boys and two girls afflicted with the disease - Andrew, 15, Willie, 11, Ida, 13 and Allina, 9 years of age. They are all in the hospital. The doctors have great hopes of saving all of them with the exception of Allina, whom they have practically given up. Her symptoms are similar to that of her parents just before they died. A baby three months old, and a little boy three years of age who also ate some of the uncooked pork, have so far shown no symptoms of the disease.
It is learned that it was about a month ago that the Freys killed two hogs. One of them they sold dressed and the other they kept for their own use. They noticed in dressing the one they kept that something seemed to be the matter with its liver, and they threw that part of the animal away. The reason that Mr. and Mrs. Frey were affected worse than any of the rest was on account of the fact that they both tasted some of the raw meat when they were making sausage, to see if it was properly seasoned. This accounts for the quick action of the trichina. The children were away at school at the time and none of them ate any of the meat until it was make into summer sausage, which is hung up and smoked, but is not cooked. It was nearly two weeks after when they became ill. Their suffering was terrible. It is stated that it took two strong men to hold Mr. Frey in bed a short time before he died.
Mr. and Mrs. Frey were both natives of Russia and there was but a few months difference in their ages. Mr. Frey was 35 years of age last October and Mrs. Frey was 35 last March. They left Lodi sixteen months ago, having sold their place at Victor.
