She was the third of six children and received her elementary education at District #1 in Clay County. She received her secondary education at Sutton High School, graduating in the class of 1943. Velma also cooked at the Skyliner Café in Sutton and the Sutton Community Home. She was very active in the Federated Church teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. Velma was an active member of Club and the women’s circles at the Federated Church serving on many committees. She served at and called others to serve many funeral luncheons and dinners.
