Theron M. Books. 87, formerly of 21 E. Maple St., Cleona, died Thursday morning in the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born in Abilene, Kan., a son of the late Jacob D. and Leah Musser Books. He was the former owner of Books Planning Mill, Cleona. His wife, the former Katie Brandt Books, died March 19, 1971. Books was a member of the Fairland Brethren in Christ Church, the Home Department of the Sunday school, and was a former trustee of the church. He is survived by a son, Theodore B. Books, Cleona; two daughters, Orpha, wife of James Templin, Lebanon, and Olive, wife of Harold Hostetter, Annville RD 1, with whom he lived; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jacob and Elmer, both of Cleona, and Bishop Titus Books, Annville RD1, also a sister, Esther, wife of Ethan Kreider, Campbelltown. Orpha Books Templin, 94, of the Lebanon Valley Home, 550 E. Main Street, Annville died Thursday, March 25, 2010 in the home. She was the wife of the late James E. Templin, Sr. to whom she married on August 30, 1940 and who died in 2006.
Born in Cleona on June 13, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Theron M. and Katie Brandt Books. She attended Lebanon Business College and was employed for more than 50 years by Russell Stine and the Lebanon Screw Company. She was a member of Fairland Brethren Christ Church, Cleona where she had been active in the Choir, Sunday School, and the Sewing Circle. Orpha was also a life member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary and active volunteer since 1960 and in 2004, she received recognition from Good Samaritan Health Services for 9000 hours of volunteerism. She was also a volunteer at Messiah Village, 25 years for the RSVP Program, and volunteered for 500 hours for the American Red Cross during WW II folding surgical dressings. Her and her husband attended many coins shows together.
She is survived by a son James E., Jr. and wife Joanne Tice Templin of Lancaster, two grandchildren Joel Michael Templin, and Janessa Jo Templin. She was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two brothers Theodore and Ethan Books, a sister Olive Hostetter, and two infant sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM from the Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Main Street, Annville. Interment will be held in Fairland Brethren in Christ Cemetery, Cleona. Viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6-8 PM and also on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 AM at the funeral home.

H. Ellis Kreider, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at the age of 84 in his residence at the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home. He was the devoted husband to Patsy "Pat" Hollenbeck Kreider. He was born in Campbelltown on October 18, 1924, to Ethan and Esther Books Kreider. He retired after 25 years as a Realtor, owning and operating Kreider Real Estate. He also was employed in Hershey for Century 21 and Coldwell Banker Real Estate. He was a lifetime member of the Palmyra Brethren in Christ Church. He graduated from Hershey High School, attended Lebanon Valley College, and graduated from Houghton College. After World War II, he sailed with a relief ship, transporting cattle to Poland. He was an avid hiker and enjoyed walking. He was past president of the Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club, a Penn State football fan, and he and his wife enjoyed farming on their son's organic vegetable farm. He was a long time board member of the United Christian Cemetery in Campbelltown. Surviving in addition to his wife Pat are his children, Timothy Kreider and his wife, Wendy of Campbelltown, and Jonathan and his wife, Elizabeth Weaver Kreider of Wrightsville; grandsons Nathan Allen Kreider and Ellis Aaron Weaver-Kreider; sisters Ruth Landis and Marian Hock, both of Carlisle; and a brother, Harold Kreider of Englewood, Ohio. He is preceded in death by brothers Marlin and Ray Kreider. Relatives and friends are invited for a time of viewing on Sunday, January 11, 2009, from 57 p.m. at the Rothermel Funeral Home Inc., 25 W. Royce E. Buckwalter was born August 15, 1928 in Cleona, PA, the son of Roy and Ruth (Books) Buckwalter. Royce graduated from Hesston Academy and attended Hesston College in Kansas.
On June 1, 1951 Royce was united in marriage to Betty Jean Swartzendruber in Wellman. He was a loving husband for 62 years and devoted father of 3.
He enjoyed working for his dad Roy and became the owner of the Buckwalter Motors car dealerships in Wellman and Washington selling Chevrolets and other brands. He retired in 1998 but continued to spend his time helping his son, Tom.
Royce was a lifelong member of the Wellman Mennonite Church where he served on the Church Council and pastoral search committee, and was an Elder, Trustee, Treasurer, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was a former member of the Wellman Rotary Club where he served as President. He served on the IMS school board and their planning committee, a member of Wellman Community Club, served on the City of Wellman planning and zoning committee, and was the treasurer of the Chevrolet advertising board.
Royce died on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at his home in Wellman at the age of 85 years. Royce is survived by his wife Betty of Wellman, son Tom (Paula) Buckwalter and granddaughters Anne and Renee of Wellman, daughter Jane (Duane) Mauldin and grandchildren Anthony and Ruth of Mesa, AZ, son John (Pam) Buckwalter and grandchildren Kamryn and Jack of Scottsdale, AZ, and a sister Laura Nicholls of Palm Bay, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a step mother Marie Martin Buckwalter and a sister Mary Hudachek. The funeral service will be held at 10:00am Monday November 25th at Wellman Mennonite Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 6:00pm on Sunday November 24th at Buckwalter Motors in Wellman with family present from 2:00 to 6:00. 18 Nov 1966: Marine Lance Corporal Jay Karl Books, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore B. Books, 104 Center St., Cleona, was killed Wednesday in action near the demilitarized zone in Viet Nam, authorities reported Thursday. Cpl. Books was assigned to the Force Logistics Support Group A, Headquarters and Supply Co., Combined Action Co. He worked as a carpenter, rebuilding native villages that had been destroyed by allied action. His assignment also included patrol duty. He was the seventh Lebanon County serviceman to die in Viet Nam. Notification of his death came in a Defense Department telegram to his parents, it was reported. Cpl. Books, a 1964 graduate of Annville-Cleona High School, enlisted in the Marines May 24, 1965. Prior to his enlistment, he had worked with his father at the Theodore B. Books Planing Mill in Cleona. He underwent basic training at Parris Island, S. C., and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N. C., and Camp Pendleton, Calif., before leaving for Viet Nam June 6, 1966. He was a member of Fairland Brethren in Christ Church the Berean Sunday School Class of the church and the Cleona Fire Company. Jay's MOS was 3051 Warehouse Clerk, however, he felt that serving with a logistics unit wasn't his style. He thought he could contribute some of his carpentry skills to assist the Vietnamese people if he could transfer to a Marine pacification team. He volunteered for the Marine civil action program, and was accepted. After training, he was assigned to Combined Action Platoon (CAP) Hotel-1 at Red Beach becoming one of the eight original members of that unit. Jay's CAP platoon worked long hours helping build schools and hospitals in Quang Nam province. In a letter home, Jay wrote, "We go on sweeps and patrols just like the infantry. We work with the Vietnamese people, administer medical aid, and build dwellings." In another letter to a family friend, he wrote, "I know God has a plan for each of our lives. I have a lot to live for, and there's a lot I miss and would like to do. But I try not to think of home. My mind is always on thoughts of getting wounded or killed." Between patrols and working in the local villages, Jay was assigned to build an observation tower that dominated the skyline of the Force Logistics Command base camp at Red Beach. At approximately 0200 hours on the morning of 16 Nov 1966, the Viet Cong launched a surprise attack at Red Beach. Jay was killed in action during that attack. He was blown out of an observation tower by an exploding rocket, and was thought to have died by concussion, or by the impact of the fall. The tragic irony of his death was that his body was found at the bottom of the tower he had built. Red Beach was later renamed Camp Books in his honor. The tragic irony of his death was that his body was found at the bottom of the tower he had built." While that's a nice story, it isn't correct ... it probably is taken in part from Michael P. Kelley's "Where We Were in Vietnam", page 5-64, which says the Red Beach complex "was renamed to honor Cpl Jay K. Books, USMC, a data processor who...was KIA 16 Nov 66, when 122mm rocket hit guard tower he was manning at Red Beach." However, Mike got it wrong; had he not died (2011) before publishing a second edition the text quoted above wouldn't read quite as it does. LCpl BOOKS was assigned to H&S Company, 3rd Service Battalion (aka Force Logistics Support Group ALPHA). H&S Company was tasked to support a Combined Action Platoon known as HOTEL-2 (not HOTEL-1) ... but HOTEL-2 was not at Red Beach, it was located a bit further north at the Nam-O hamlet. HOTEL-2 was attacked on the night of 16 Nov 1966, and LCpl BOOKS was killed in the engagement - according to his DD 1300 Report of Casualty death was caused by "multiple shrapnel wounds to the chest sustained from hostile explosive device while in a defensive position."
