Philo T Pritzkau was born in 1902 in a sodhouse on a homestead near Burnstad, which is south of Napoleon, Logan County, North Dakota to John "Johann Pritzkau and Elenore Engel. Philo was their 7th of 8 natural born children and youngest son. John and Elenore also raised a grandson they considered their son and 9th child. John and Elenore were German-Russian immigrants who came to America about 1886 from Neu Danzig, Russia.
Philo spent his childhood haying, harvesting and threshing to help his family eke out a living on their farm near Napoleon, North Dakota. A town with a population under 200, Philo stated in his book "Growing up in North Dakota" that you could see from one end of the town to the other. Nevertheless, he considered it a lively place, adding, "The butcher shop was a great socializing place."
As a teacher; Philo like many of his students who attended his one-room school spoke German with English as his second language. Philo was the only one of his siblings to attend college. He went to the University of North Dakota for one semester, then ran out of money. To earn more, he secured a teaching job at a country school, where teachers were in short supply. There he discovered a love for teaching that eventually led him to earn a doctorate in education from Columbia University and later he was offered a teaching position at University of Connecticut which brought him to Mansfield, Conn., where he lived for 30 years.
As an author; Philo wrote several books, his best known book "Growing up in North Dakota" is a insightful look at his growing from boyhood to manhood on the family farm in North Dakota and the many lessons he learned from his parents and older siblings. A wonderful book tells of how tough it was and how hard they all worked in that era to claim the land the homestead act promised. It also shares the many family trials and triumphs of their lives.
Philo lived to be 102 years old and even in his advanced years he was a man with a great sense of humor and a vibrant personality.
Philo T. Pritzkau's only child and daughter, Patricia Pritzkau MacLachlan, is an award-winning author of many children's books, possibly the most well known is the "Sarah Plain and Tall" trilogy.

Philo heiratete Moss, Madonna Gertrude am 26 Jun 1932. Madonna wurde geboren am 30 Nov 1905 in Luray, Russell County, Kansas, USA; gestorben am 30 Jan 1994 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA; wurde beigesetzt in Spring Grove Cemetery, Florence, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA. KALISPELL - Ronald Joseph Pritzkau, 84, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Heritage Place in Kalispell.
"Red" was born May 25, 1915, in Napoleon, N.D., the son of German emigrants who migrated from Russia to North Dakota in 1880. They homesteaded near Napoleon, where they raised several children.
Red graduated from Napoleon High School in 1934. Jobs being scarce during the Depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and worked in a camp near Northwood, N.D., where he met his wife, Henrietta Schol. He and Henrietta were married Jan. 18, 1937, with Red working as a farmhand for his wife's parents.
Asked to return to the CCCs, Red transferred to Missoula, leaving his wife and three children in North Dakota. When the CCCs were disbanded, he decided to stay in Montana. His wife and children came by train to Missoula, and Montana became their new home.
Red then went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad as a fireman. He continued this job until joining the Navy, serving until the war was over.
After the war, he went to work for H.O. Bell in Missoula as an auto mechanic. Always looking for greener pastures, Red moved to Plains in 1947, working for Vacura Motors, then to Camas Prairie in 1948, working in a lumber camp.
The family moved to Hot Springs in 1949, where Red set up his own mechanic shop. By this time, his family had grown to include six children.
At this time, Red followed an opportunity to work for the Forest Service in Thompson Falls. The job was discontinued and he went to work for an auto shop downtown. Red worked as a mechanic for many years, and the family grew to include three more children.
Red was an avid fan of the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks, never missing a basketball or football game.
In 1968, Red moved the family to Seattle, where he worked at a Ford garage until retirement.
He and Henrietta enjoyed their retirement, traveling and visiting their many children, grandchildren and friends. In 1987, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Spanaway, Wash., with many family members and friends in attendance.
The Pritzkaus moved to an adult apartment following Red's heart surgery five years ago, from which he never fully recovered.
He is survived by his wife Henrietta of Kalispell; eight living children, Myrna, John, Gary, Kaye, Carol, Nancy, Laurie and Peggy; and a brother, Philo Pritzkau of Leeds, Mass.
A daughter, Janice, passed away in 1959. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren (the oldest was killed in a tragic accident in 1998) and 17 great-grandchildren.
Red will be greatly missed for his constant sense of humor.
Pastor Gaylund Olson will officiate at 2 p.m. graveside services at Thompson Falls City Cemetery on Saturday, May 6. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Home in Thompson Falls.

Our dear mother, sister, and friend, Diann, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2013. She was born in Murray, UT to Julius & Gwen B. Pritzkau on January 20, 1954. She graduated from Bingham High School in 1972. Diann married Stephen Withers and they later divorced. She then married James Bailey. Diann loved history, particularly Utah history. Her father Julius installed the love for it in her, and they shared the interest. Diann had a fondness for antiques and the story they carried with them. While growing up, Diann worked a few odd jobs but was blessed to be a stay home mom where she raised her three children, Melani A. Martinez (Phil), Stephen L. Withers (Tanya) and C.J. Withers. She had 3 beautiful grandchildren, Marcus, Monica and Adilyn.
She is survived by her children and her siblings: Kathleen, Kyle, Julie, Shelley, Jolene, and Lyle. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, and her sister Lori. The family would like to thank the staff at IHC Medical Center and her many friends in the Cedar City area.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Broomhead Funeral Home in Riverton. A gathering starts at 10:30 with services beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment at the Riverton City Cemetery. www.broomheadfuneralhome.com
