Gerard spent his boyhood on his parents' farm near Stockham. He attended Stockham schools, graduating from the high school there in 1939.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Free Reformed Church by The Rev. Hofer. Since residing in Aurora he had transferred his membership to the Evangelical United Bretheren Church there. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge at Alhambra, California.
Gerard and Charlotte farmed in Clay County until 1956 when they moved to California, residing there until 1962 when they returned to Nebraska, coming to Aurora where he has since resided. He has been employed in the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Commission Office of the United Stated Department of Agriculture at Clay Center where he was serving as Chief Clerk at the time of his death.
