Richard/b Brooke, a shoemaker of Manchester, Lancashire, probably born circa 15401, left a wife named Dorothy, who may or may not have been the mother of his children.1
The will of Richard Brooke of Manchester, shoemaker, dated 5 Aug 1607, and signed by mark, left one third of his estate to Dorothy now my wife, and one third to sons Thomas, Robert and William. Of the last third, he left John Brooks son of my late son John Brooke late deceased 13s. 4d., to Richard Brooke brother of the said John £6 toward his bringing up until age 12 years, and to Henry Brooke son of John Brooke 5s. Also, to Elizabeth Brooke my mother 20s., 6s. 8d. to be distributed by my executors upon twenty of the poorest householders in Manchester, to Thomas Brooke my son £10, to Dorothy Brooke my wife £3-6-8, to William Brooke my son £5, to Robert Brooke my son 33s. 4d., and to Richard Brooke, Thomas Brooke, Margaret Brooke and Elizabeth Brooke my grandchildren sons and daughters of Thomas Brooke 13s. 4d. equally to be divided among them. To John Winne of Stockport 6s. 8d., to John Greadley 5s. 8d., and the residue of the estate to be divided equally between mother Elizabeth Brooke, wife Dorothy, and sons Robert and William. Whereas Richard Brooke had leased of Robert Berke, gentleman, one dwelling house and shop with appurtenances for the term of 21 years, "wherein twenty years or thereabouts are yet to come," he left Dorothy the house and shop while she remained a widow, devising them to his son Thomas should she remarry. Executors were to be wife Dorothy and son Thomas; overseers, loving friends George Traves of the Yealdhouse and William Kenyon of Manchester. A list of "Debts owing unto me the testator" included "Thomas Brooke my son £5. 12s. 6d."1
Richard Brucke, howsehoulder of Manchester, was buried 1 Nov 1607 at Manchester Cathedral.

Richard heiratete Brooke, Dorothy - wife of geschätzt 1564. Dorothy wurde geboren in 1543 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, Großbritannien; gestorben in 1607 in Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, Großbritannien; wurde beigesetzt in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, Großbritannien. Born: Manchester, Lancashire, England
Henry/1w Brooks was probably born in or near Manchester, Lancashire circa 1592. The location of his birth is inferred from Y-DNA testing which has established Henry's close relationship to Richard/b Brooke (d. 1607) of Manchester. Henry's birthdate is calculated from a December, 1658 suit in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in which he testified he was then "about 66" years of age.2,3 He was probably the Henry, son of John deceased, whose grandfather Richard/b Brooke, of Manchester, in his will dated 5 Aug 1607, left Henry Brooke, son of his son John Brooke, five shillings.4
Henry Brooks married (1), probably by 1622 in England, an unnamed first wife with whom he had all of his 8 known children.5,3 (Here we include Hannah Brooks, who, while sometimes erroneously ascribed to Thomas Brooks of Concord, was Henry's daughter.)
From Shattuck in 1835 to John Brooks Threlfall in 1973, many authorities have suggested a sibling relationship between Henry and Thomas Brooks. In this regard, the year 2006 brought a gratifying conjunction between Y-DNA testing and the unpublished English research of John Brooks Threlfall. (Full details are available via the DNA Testing link on this site's home page.) Here we will simply state that Henry and Thomas Brooks were evidently 1st cousins, grandsons of the aforementioned Richard Brooke. Previously, the scant evidence for such a close connection was found in the will of Henry's son-in-law Thomas Fox, which speaks of "uncle Thomas Brooks," and in the fact that Thomas's son Joshua was living at Henry's son Isaac's place at Concord in 1666.6,7,4
Henry Brooks first appears in New England records on 14 Mar 1639, when, of Concord, he was admitted a freeman of the Bay Colony8, and was a Concord resident 12 Apr 1641, when the birth of his son Joseph was recorded there.9,10 He then appears between 1649 and 1657 on the tax list of Woburn, Massachusetts.11 20 Dec 1650, William Brackenbury ["Brakenbury"], late of Charlestowne (where he had been constable), sold to Henry Brookes of Woburn, yeoman, for £50, six parcels of upland and meadow (178 acres in all) at Horn Pond, together with a house frame. Brackenbury's wife Alice ["Ales"] gave her consent by mark. Henry Brooks's homestead, described in Woburn records in 1678, was located on South Street (later, lower Main Street), and as late as 1789 was owned by a direct descendant, Capt. Nathaniel Brooks.12,13......

From History of the State of California and an extended history of its southern coast counties - Call Number from CA State Library: [Alcove] 979.4 G9 -- 2 -- Book NC, Page 1132:
EDWARD C.D. VAN ORNAM. The first representative of the Van Ornam family in the United States was Great-grandfather Van Ornam, who, as may be surmised from the surname, was a native of Holland. Bringing with him all the sturdy qualities for which the Dutch as a nation are noted, he settled in New York state and reared his family amid the trying conditions which always prevail in a new country.
A grandson of this immigrant and the father of our subject, Daniel D. Van Ornam, was born in Willsboro, N.Y., where in his early manhood years he followed his trade of mason and builder. From there he later went to Buffalo, that state, and still later to Massachusetts, in both of which places he continued to work at his trade. Some time before his death he removed to the middle west, settling in Davenport, Iowa, and later in Cedar county, that state, where he died when in his fifty-seventh year.
As his wife he had chosen Harriet F. Ross, who was born in Massachusetts, the daughter of Peter Ross, the latter born in New York state of English descent. In the latter's family was another daughter, Olive, who became the wife of Mr. Burbank, by whom she has one son, Luther Burbank, who is known the world over as the Wizard of Horticulture. Mrs. Van Ornam survived her husband many years, and passed away at the home of her son Edward in Long Beach September 4, 1906, where she was in her ninety-fifth year. For many years she had been a member of the Methodist Church, and throughout her life she exemplified the teachings of the Christian religion.
Of the ten children born to Daniel D. and Harriet F. (Ross) Van Ornam, only two are now living, Edward C.D. and Ferris B., both of Long Beach.
Edward C.D. was born in Champlain, N.Y., August 8, 1836 and was reared in Buffalo until six years old, when the family removed to Massachusetts, settling in Worcester. He attended the public schools of that city for a time, but later returned to Buffalo, where he was a pupil in the public schools. By the time he had reached his sixteenth year, he had settled upon definite plans for his future career in the business world. From his father he learned the brick mason's and builder's trade, and in 1854, when the family removed to Davenport, Iowa, he worked side by side with his father in the execution of the many and important contracts which came to them. Among them may be mentioned the Cook & Sargent's marble block, the Episcopal Church of Davenport, besides numerous fine residences.
After he followed his trade continuously for about twenty years, he made a change in both occupation and location, in 1870 removing to Cass county, Iowa, where he purchased wild land and started out as a farmer and stock-raiser. His specialty, however, was the raising of fine stock, consisting principally of high-grade Short-horn Durham cattle. During the eleven years which he carried on stock-raising in Cass county, he was fairly successful, but a desire to resume his trade caused him to dispose of his interests there and remove to Lewis, that county. In that city and Omaha, Neb., whither he later removed, he carried on contracting until 1887, during the winter of that year coming to California and visiting many cities in various parts of the state, Long Beach being among the number.
He returned to Iowa in the following spring and again took up his trade but the middle states seemed less attractive than formerly and he determined to transfer his interests to the west. Coming to Long Beach in 1893 he at once began to take contracts for building and during the twelve years following erected many of the finest buildings in this city. He has erected a number of residences on his own account and later sold them. Since 1905 he has not been in active business and is now living retired in the enjoyment of the competency accumulated through many years of continued activity.
In Durant, Cedar county, Iowa, Mr. Van Ornam married Ann M. Doolittle, born in Wallingford, Conn., her father being Chester Doolittle, well known in that state, where his death occurred. Mrs. Van Ornam died in 1890 in Lewis, Iowa. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Ornam, as follows: Hattie M., the wife of Fred W. Snell, of Buena Park, Cal.; Luther L., who died in early childhood; Bertha F., Mrs. John B. Steen, of Long Beach; William W., also of this city; Edward E., who died when in his twenty-fourth year; Chester D., manager of the San Pedro Lumber Company at Huntington Beach; and Ralph R., who is in the employ of the Nofzinger Lumber Company, Los Angeles. In his church affiliations Mr. Van Ornam is a Presbyterian and politically he is a Republican.
