This family with 5 children left Antwerp. Belgium aboard the vessel SS Zeeland. Their aim was to join the John Schatz family in Odessa, Washington, who was the brother of Mrs. Zimbelman. They arrived at Ellis Island on Oct 33, 1901. They ahd to remain there for several days as when they arrived in the USA, Mr. Zimbelman had only $13.00 in his pocket. After receiving money from their Odessa relatives, they made their way as far as Sutton, Nebraska where they worked long enough to earn their fare to Loveland, Colorado. Here, they worked in the sugar beet fields for Mr. Boetcher. A short time later, they were able to continue to Odessa, Washington. They lived with the Schatz family until they could arrange for a homestead tract and built a house on the site. The homestead was located near the present Bob Kuch farm northesast of Marlin, Washington. Here the older boys helped their father to clear land and raise wheat and cattle plus taking jobs around the countryside when work was available. After 11 years of farming, Mr. & Mrs. Zimbelman retired and moved to Odessa until 1924 when Mr. Zimbelman died.

SYRING, Viola R. (Age 82) entered into the arms of the Lord, her Savior, on the 16th of November, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 19, 1924 in Marlin, WA to Gustave and Emma Zimbelman. She and her husband Bob celebrated 60 years of marriage in August, 2006. Vi loved the great outdoors camping with the family and traveling with the motor home. Vi loved square and round dancing belonging to the Whirlaway Square Dance Club and the Wagaround Round Dance Club in Spokane and numerous other groups in Arizona. Vi and Bob spent 15 or so years wintering in Arizona and have many long lasting memories of friends there. She and Bob enjoyed the many years of hiking many miles of trails in Arizona and Utah as well as many trails in National Parks. Her immediate family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved working with her hands making afghans for grandchildren, ceramics and tole painting. She had quite the green thumb with house plants and loved to look for wildflowers, knowing the name of as many as she could. Vi was a beautiful piano player. She was a big fan of Gonzaga basketball, Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and shared her love of this with her daughters and granddaughters. The family loved to play pinochle, dominoes and many other games. Mom will always be mom
but we were fortunate that she was also our friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Leo and Melvin Zimbelman and sister Ione Zeiler. Vi is survived by her husband Robert; daughters Rebecca (Tom) Lucas, Marilyn Nelson, Roberta (Les) Wakeley, all of Spokane, WA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers Donald Zimbelman, Othello, WA, Herbert and Robert Zimbelman, both of Odessa, WA; two sisters Florence Schlimmer, Odessa, WA, Rhea Strate, Spokane, WA; sister-in-law Shirley Zimbelman, Almira, WA; numerous nieces and nephews. Bill, Billy, Papa, Daddy, Uncle Bill, aka William Joel Zimbelman, was born February 2, 1953 in Marlin Washington to Donald Zimbelman and Gloria Starkel. Surrounded by love ones, he moved on to be reunited with Sue on November 15, 2018.
The majority of his early life was spent in the area surrounding Odessa. He later moved to the Soap Lake/Ephrata area where he met and married the love of his life Sue and settled down to raise his family.
In his professional life, Bill was an iron worker retiring after 30 years of service. It is here where he met some of his dearest lifelong friends. His passion was the cowboy life and his grandkids. He was as tough as nails but could easily be turned to mush by the simple phrase "Papa." Papa was either buying them ponies, taking them to play days and fishing or playing backyard baseball with his grandkids (cheating often). Bill was a man of few words, but when he spoke people listened, except, of course, Sue.
His hobbies included fishing, building things, making sausage with family and friends, raising and riding horses, riding bulls, bulldogging, roping, dancing in the kitchen with his wife, daughters and grandkids, watching old western movies, playing poker with his family (cheating here also), intimidating his girls' boyfriends and refusing to drive anything but Fords.
His family was his whole world, and we will miss him dearly. But, knowing he is dancing with mom to the Orange Blossom Special comforts us.
Bill is preceded in death by his wife Sue, dad Donnie and brother George.
Bill is survived by his mother Gloria, sisters Jodi and Janie, brother Keith, daughters Shannon (and Stephen) Dyer, Shonna (and Ernie) Allen, Brandi (and Aaron) Wagner, Mariah Blackburn, son Paul and Nastasha Bennett, and grandchildren Kelly, DJ, Mia, Harlee, Joseph, William, Trenton, Nathan, Natalie, Michael, Peyton, Wyatt, Shelby, Ryan, Cullen and Emilia and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorial services were held November 21, 2018 at the Ephrata Cemetery.
