Selby - Mass of Christian Burial for Selma S. Groth will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selby, with Fr. Todd Reitmeyer, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Enderlin, N.D., 5 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a Wake service at the church 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation begins at the church 5 p.m. Wednesday. Selma Schlecht, daughter of Susie (Buerkle) and Godhielf Schlecht, was born April 4, 1946, at Jamestown, N.D. She attended elementary school in Kulm, N.D., and was graduated from high school at Edgeley, N.D., in 1964. She married Douglas L. Groth on May 28, 1966, at Enderlin. In 1967 she earned her BS degree in Elementary Education at UND, Ellendale, N.D., and an MS in education in 1983 at Northern State University. Her teaching experience started at Wyndmere, N.D., with 11 years as a grade 5 teacher followed by 4 years as "Summer Migrant" teacher at Fairmount, N.D. Selma and her family moved to Selby in 1978. After 20 years at the Selby Area School as an elementary principal, Reading Recovery and junior high teacher, she entered the Reading Enhancement program and was recently the Aberdeen Area Regional Leader with SD READS. Selma's career philosophy of "Education must meet the needs of all students and develop skills and knowledge necessary to be productive, responsible citizens in society" was a gift shared by being actively involved as a team member in many professional activities, and as a council member and teacher of religious education at St. Anthony's Catholic Parish. Her enthusiastic approach to life served as a catalyst to everyone that knew her. Selma died at her home early Sunday morning, April 10, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 59. She is survived by her husband, Douglas of Selby; daughter, April of Rochester, Minn., and future son-in-law Chad Bursiek of Rochester, Minn.; four brothers, Oliver (June) Schlecht and Chester Schlecht, both of Gackle, N.D., Wesley (Connie) Schlecht and Solomon "Sonny" (Judy) Schlecht, both of Edgeley, N.D.; and one sister, Murhel (James) Carlson of Ellendale, N.D. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter (April), her parents, and a sister-in-law, Ruth (Chester) Schlecht. Casketbearers will be Patty and C.J. Niemiller, Jean and John Stefanich, Don and Ruth Ann Akre, Florence Karst, Justin Karst, Pat Tisdall, and Justin Tisdall, all of Selby. Honorary bearers will be the SD Reads-Area Literacy Coaches and Directors. Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
