Born in the parish of Spott, Haddington, county of East Lothian,Scotland, he emigrated to Canada at the age of 15, traveling from Glasgow, Scotland, via Moville, Ireland, to Quebec, arriving on June 9, 1912, aboard the ship Scandinavia.
He emigrated to the United States from Winnipeg, Manitoba, arriving on May 10, 1924, at Northport, Washington, with just $12 in his pocket. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on December 12, 1936.
On July 4, 1928, he married Amelia Violet "Vi" St. Clair Callaway in Rossland, British Columbia, Canada.
He worked for the Great Northern Railroad as an Oil Pumper, based at the Hillyard yard, Spokane, Washington. He retired from the railroad in August, 1966, and unfortunately died in Spokane before even receiving his first retirement check.
