Excerpt from "Eureka 1887-1937" compiled by Eureka's Golden Jubilee Organization:
      LOST IN A BLIZZARD
Mrs. Henry Pietz of Eureka, relates the following gripping story of her mother, Mrs. J.J. Harr, whose experience in a blizzard has often been told in after years. Mrs. Pietz's story follows:
It was on a bright warm day in winter, late in the month of February, 1893, when Mrs. Harr had finished her family washing and hung it on the clothesline about 100yards from the house. A sudden snow storm came up and the wind had whipped one of the sheets from the line and Mrs. Harr went outside to pick it up. The storm gained such force that she was unable to see the house and began to walk in search of it.
She was dressed in a house dress, wore bedroom slippers, and had a shawl thrown over her shoulders.
Mrs. Harr walked blindly, all the while realizing that she was utterly lost, but also remembering the blizzard of 1888, when people had frozen because they had stopped to rest, so she kept on her feet, weary and exhausted. Her mind was constantly on the five small children who were left at the farm house with no one to care for them but the oldest sister, Emelia, who was 12 years old. She prayed that she might be returned to them.
Meanwhile, the anxious little brood was growing more alarmed at the delay in their mother's return and one of the older boys begged to go out and look for her. The elder sister was firm in her command that they all stay inside, even though she too knew that her mother was lost. The mother trudged through the snowstorm hour after hour, occasionally stopping for a minute, throwing the shawl over her head and extending it out beyond her face to shield her from the wind and to aid her in catching her breath. Suddenly, she heard a train whistle, and began stumbling toward the welcome sound, She knew if she could reach the track, she would reach either Hillsview or Eureka. It was with a sigh of relief that she found the tracks as dusk was fast approaching. Following the track, Mrs. Harr soon saw the outlines of the Frankhauser slaughter house, now belonging to the Dierenfeldt Market, and found shelter and rest there until she felt able to continue on home. She was able to find a fence that she knew would lead her to the gate of the Harr homestead which was then located where the Mehlhaff slaughter house now stands.
The joy of her family in seeing their mother return was almost indescribable. Their father was employed in town by Martin Schamber, Sr., and was not aware of the tragedy that had threatened his wife until he arrived home that evening and all were safe.
Mrs. Harr was confined to her bed for two or three weeks and suffered the loss of her speaking voice for several months following the ordeal. Five weeks after the time of the frightful experience, Martha, now Mrs. Phil Tempel, of Marion, South Dakota, was born.
      DATE OF BIRTH
