Funeral services for Bertha Knoll, 89, Wishek, were held Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with the Rev. Marty Toepke-Floyd officiating.
Mrs. Knoll died May 8 at the Wishek Nursing Home.
Bertha was born Dec. 12, 1909, on the family homestead west of Wishek, the daughter of John and Magdalena (Bier) Sayler. She grew up in the area and received her education at a country school. After school, she hired out to help neighbors with housework and light farming.
Bertha married Arthur Knoll on Feb. 14, 1932, in the parsonage at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, rural Zeeland. They made their home on a farm northwest of Venturia, where they raised small grains and livestock. Mr. Knoll died in March 1987. Bertha continued to make her home on the farm until June 1994, when she entered the Wishek Nursing Home.
Bertha was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. Music was a big part of her life. Bertha was self taught and played the organ and piano by ear. She enjoyed entertaining at home and at the nursing home. Bertha always said, "We need good music to keep our spirits up." Her favorite time of the year was Sauerkraut Day in Wishek.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Hammill of Tacoma, Wash.; four sisters, Lydia Knoll, Ashley, Katie (Ed) Golz, Ashley, Martha Ketterling, Wishek, and Frieda Deyle, Laurel, Mont.; a brother, Edwin (Lydia) Sayler, Lehr; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Bertha was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Casket bearers were Delbert Heil, James Sayler, Francis Meier, Jacob Sayler, Ludwig Sayler and Rolland Sayler.
Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley. Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, was in charge of arrangements.
