Å“Did He Shoot Seslf Through heart or Is Organ Misplaced?
Å“Salinas physicians are at a loss to account for the failure of Charles Whisman, cashier of the First National bank of Salinas to kill himself when he shot himself directly through the body in the place where his heart should be, if his vital organs were normall placed.
Å“The bullet, which was from a 38-calibre gun, was steel-jacketed anad was perfectly aimed for a fatal wound. Probes indicated it was not deflected by gones. It entered directly over where the heart should be and came out directly behind where it should be. The bullet then continued on its way through four inches of oak furniture, struck the corner of anaother table leg. it continued on a straight course and hit an oak wall and rebounded bck to where the banker had seated himself in a chair.
Å“In spite of the wound jWhisman was not even knocked down. He got up from his chair, placed his revolver back in the drawer of his desk and then telephoned for his wife. He was removed to a sanitarum and is said to be improving rapidly.
Å“Whisman is a very popular man in Salinas. He has been suffering excruciating pain for a long time because of a disease which his causisng the arteries to harden.
