Father born in Ohio; mother born in Kentucky.There is a Miller family enumerated in the 1860 census in Randolph County, MO (place of Majorâ„¢s birth): Delilah (49, b. KY, farmer) and her children, all born in Missouri: Z (21, male), L.J. (16, male) , S.K. (14, female), and M. (6, male--this corresponds to Majorâ„¢s information).In 1870, Major Miller was 16, living with the Henderson family and working as a druggist (Mr. Henderson was a druggist as well) in Fayette, Howard, Missouri.
By 1900, Major Miller had bought the 2000-acre ranch of Henry Jones (Elko Postmaster) in Elko County twenty miles south of Elko.
In 1901, Major and partners McBride and Payne bought the former Elko Lumber Company, the lumber coming from the Sierra Nevada mountains.

1855 and was educated in the public schools and at Fayette College in Fayette, Missouri. He followed the profession of a druggist until he came to Elko County in 1877. He then followed the livestock industry on his ranch in Pleasant Valley. Later he held a number of county offices with one of them being County Recorder. His wife's maiden name was Henley and her family, the S. M. Henley's were influential in the establishment of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elko. The old Miller Ranch is presently the 6-Bar holding."
