Art B. Sauter, 83, Linton, died March 16, 2005, at a Linton hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the First Baptist Church, Linton, with the Rev. Jason Haas officiating. Burial will be in the Linton Cemetery.
Art was born on a farm near Linton Feb. 27, 1922, the son of August and Paulina (Herbold) Sauter. He attended country school. After taking time out from school to help on the farm, Art graduated from the Linton High School in 1943. After graduating, he continued to farm and worked at various local businesses, including UBC Lumber. In the late 1940's, he worked at the John Deere Implement. Art married Nyla Lloyd Dec. 22, 1947, in Herreid, S.D. Following their marriage, they farmed for a few years. They moved into Linton where he served as a Linton city police officer. He also worked at the Hague Truck Regulatory Weigh Station. He was appointed Emmons County Deputy Sheriff in 1960, and served as the county sheriff from 1979, until his retirement in 1990.
Art married Sandra Tucker Oct. 3, 1998, on the Lewis and Clark River Boat in Bismarck. They continued to live in Linton. Art remained active in retirement, patrolling the river area for the Corps of Engineers, working at the Rivery as a security guard, raising cattle and helping his son-in-law on the Ferderer farm. He was an Emergency Management Director from 1992 to 1996 and a lifetime member of the North Dakota Peace Officersâ Association and the Linton Fire Department. Art was also a member of First Baptist Church. In 2001, Art was named Fireman of the Year. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tinkering in his garage. He loved old time music, especially accordion music, polkas and waltzes. Art enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
