Christ Christian, 71, former state official and prominent Grant county and Milbank resident, died Saturday at St. Bernard hospital. He had been ill for several years with cancer and had been hospitalized since mid-October.
A retired Alban township farmer, he was a former member of the State Game, Fish and Parks commission, on which he served from 1955 to 1965. He served two terms at state senator from Grant county, from 1931 until 1935.
Baptized Christian Wilhelm Johann Christian, he was the son of Gerhard and Bertha (Weberman) Christians. He was born Sept. 15, 1895 at Bunker, Ill., and came to this state with his parents in 1906. They lived near Corona for three years and then moved to a farm near Milbank. He attended the Corona and Willow Bend schools.
He was baptized in the Lutheran faith Oct. 13, 1895 and confirmed on March 16, 1913. He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran congregation of this city. During World War I, he enlisted in the Army on April 26, 1918, and received his discharge July 9, 1919 at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
He married Rose Lillie Damerow at Milbank on March 10, 1921. They lived in Vernon, Grant Center and Alban townships, their last farm home being located about a mile and a half south of Milbank, where they developed an outstanding farmstead before retiring in 1958 and moving to the new home they built in this city on S. Main Street.
They were the parents of three children, a son and two daughters.
Mr. Christian was a member of the American Legion and VFW posts and the Milbank Commerce & Community club. He was a director of the Federal Land Bank and a member of the Milbank Rod and Gun club.
While serving as a Game commissioner, he actively promoted this section of the state and helped to arrange for the planting of antelope in this area. It was while he was serving on the commission that he became the victim of a throat cancer and underwent surgery which caused him to lose the faculty of his speech. Mr. Christian was active in the Democrat party for many years and was always interested in promoting worthwhile causes and working for community betterment.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Jimmy, and two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Delores) Oehler and Mrs. Orland (Phyllis) Henze, all of Milbank; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Wilbert, of Ligerwood, N.D., and Harry, Twin Brooks; a half-brother, George, of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Helen) Michaelson, Hinckley, Ill., and Mrs. Homer (Anna) Strangelway, Rochester, Minn., and a brother-in-law, Oscar Scherff, of Milbank.
He preceded in death by a granddaughter, his parents, three brothers, and a half-sister, Mrs. Christina Scherff, of Milbank.
The funeral was conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the Emmanuel Lutheran church by the pastor, Rev. Curtis Scheicher. Burial was made in the Milbank cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were Dell Dawson, Aberdeen; Oliver Hiesmeyer, of Estelline; Tom Skoog, Louis Mertens, Bill Fitzgerald and Erwin Hoffman. Serving as pallbearers were Jack Van Ray, Marwood Ebert, Dennis Skoog, Floyd Dailie, James Mertens, and Wayne Ells.
