Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, April 16, at St. John's Lutheran Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery. John was born July 10, 1922, on the family farm, near Kief, N.D., the son of Fred and Katie (Hoffer) Heil. John grew up and attended school near Kief. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps on Feb. 23, 1944. While serving in the Marines, John was wounded in Okinawa and received a Purple Heart. John was honorably discharged on April 3, 1946. He returned to McClusky, where he owned and operated his first service station from 1947 to 1948. He then farmed from 1948 until 1969 southwest of Kief. John moved into McClusky, where he owned and operated the Heils Mobil station from 1969 until retiring due to health reasons in 1984. John married Viola Bonnet on Nov. 9, 1969, in McClusky. John and Viola moved to Bismarck in May 2002. Viola died Aug. 28, 2002. John is survived by son and daughter-in-law, James and Sheila Heil, Bismarck; three stepsons, Don, and his wife, Mary Ann Bonnet, and Lyle, and his wife, Kelly Bonnet, all of Sheridan, Wyo., and Darrell Bonnet, Elko, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Heil, Underwood; and one sister, Florence Hornbacher, Harvey. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola; his stepdaughter, Lynn Campbell; three brothers, Harold, Leonard and Edward; and three sisters, Esther Grosz, Bertha Hoffer and Arlene Kant.
