Robert Charles Rust was born July 6, 1924 to Emma and Charles Rust in Martin, North Dakota. Bob suddenly passed away on May 20, 2009 in Fargo, North Dakota. Bob grew up on a farm outside Martin, North Dakota and graduated from Martin High School. He subsequently graduated from University of North Dakota with a degree in accounting in 1949. After a stint in the Navy during WWII, Bob married Betty Mae Rott in 1945 and they spent 60 wonderful years together until Betty was called by the Good Lord in 2005.
Bob was the consummate business man. In 1958, he moved the family from a comfortable job in Edina, Minnesota to join Dawson Insurance Agency in Fargo, North Dakota. In the mid 70's, he started Rust Insurance. With that success, he established Rust Realty with his son-in-law Arnold Kuhn in 1976. Soon thereafter he started the Four-Seasons Travel Agency with his long time friend and partner Jim Ferguson. Bob had many other business interests as well. Business came easily to Bob because he knew how to treat people right- the way you would be expected to be treated by others.
Bob was a man of many talents who touched many lives during his 84 years of life. It is difficult to list all of his accomplishments, but his greatest asset may have been his way of meeting, understanding, and knowing the people in his life. Bob was everyone's friend, and having lived in Fargo over 30 years, it seemed he knew everyone in town. Bob was very active in community service, and was a member of virtually every service club in town. Y's-men, Lions, Eagles, Elks, Scottish Rite, El Zagel-- you name it. Not only was he a member but he was involved. Selling Christmas Trees in the ice cold for Y's-men, going door-to-door selling nuts, bulbs and brooms for Lions, leading the Scottish Rite, marching with the Shriners as part of the Grenadiers rifle corps--it seemed that he had endless energy to give to the community. He was proud of his service to the Republican Party of North Dakota serving as advisor to Senator Mark Andrews and his multiple successful re-election campaigns. He served the Small Business Administration, the Cass County Social Services Board, American Legion, and as the first mayor of Briarwood, North Dakota.
Bob also served on the Board of the American Baptist Homes of the Midwest and the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls South Dakota. Bob joined the USF Board of Trustees in 1975 and served two terms as Chairman of the Board from 1983-86 and 1994-97. Bob and Betty received the University of Sioux Falls Inez Beebe Perisho Award as a couple in 1994. They were longtime members of the First Baptist Church in Fargo, where Bob served as treasurer for more than 20 years.
Bob and Betty called many places home. Fargo, of course, but also a lake home on Big Sand Lake, Park Rapids, Minnesota as well as a winter home in Naples, Florida were considered home as well. They had many friends every place they lived. The passing of Bob is the end of an era and he will be sorely missed by friends and family
Bob is reunited with Betty who passed away on December 4, 2005, in Naples, Florida.
Survivors include: daughter, Susan (Arnie) Kuhn, son, Robert J (Mary) Rust; 3 grandchildren, Sara Kuhn, Cassandra (John) Petri & Charles Rust; 3 great-grandchildren, Elias, Konstantin & Maria Petri.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7, in Hanson-Runsvold funeral home, Fargo. Memorial service will be Thursday, May 28, 1 PM at Hubbard United Methodist Church, Hubbard, MN. Burial will be Friday, May 29, noon, at ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Robert C. Rust Scholarship Fund, University of Sioux Falls, 1101 W. 22nd St., Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57105.
