David C. Bowersox, son of David F. and Matilda Bowersox, was born at Bauchman Mill, Carroll county, Md., February 25, 1845, and departed this life August 21, 1931, at the home of his son Elmer, 2305 K Street, Belleville, Kan., at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 26 days. In 1849 he moved with his parents to Adam county Ohio, and in 1854 he moved to Dark county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In May, 1864, he enlisted in Company B, 152nd Ohio Infantry and served until he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Sarah A. Ream at Greenville, O., on October 8, 1868. To this union two children were born, Elmer E., and Stella, who died in infancy. He moved to Galesburg, Ill., in 1869, where he resided for two years. In 1871 he came to Kansas and took up a homestead four miles southwest of Belleville, where he resided until 1927, when he moved to Belleville with his son. He was one of Republic county's pioneers, and the last of the original homesteaders in Belleville township. He always took a leading part in all community activities, serving his township as trustee, and his district, as a member of the school board for a number of years. He was a charter member of the Republic County Mutual Fire Insurance company and served as its first president. He was also a charter member of the John Brown Post 44 G.A.R., and was a regular attendant as long as health permitted. He confessed his faith in Christ and united with the Methodist church in Belleville over 50 years ago and was a regular attendant until his declining years. Mr. Bowersox lead a consistent Christian life and was a lover of his home and family, always happiest when his six great-grandchildren were with him. He had been an invalid for the past two years and bore his suffering patiently. His wife preceded his departure from this earth June 12, 1900. He is survived by his son, Elmer E., and wife, three grandchildren, Mrs. Ralph Frazier, Mrs. Orpha Fry and Claud Bowersox of Belleville, Kan., and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, John R. Bowersox of Belleville, Kan., and Joshua M. Bowersox of Palisade, Neb., and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted from the Central Christian Church in Belleville by the Rev. P.O. Davis Sunday, August 23, and interment was made in Belleville cemetery.
