      William Henry "Bill" Shinkle, 95, of rural Carthage, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Quincy.
      Bill was born April 5, 1915, the son of George B. and Abbie (Clark) Shinkle in Harmony Township, Hancock County. In November 1939, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Orth in Carthage. She preceded him in death.
      He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Esther Souder and Mary Ehlers; and a nephew, Richard Souder.
      Bill is survived by one daughter, Mary Christina Shinkle, Carthage; two nieces, Sue Pierce and Melinda "Casey" Mercado; and two great nephews, Jeffrey and Bruce Souder.
      He graduated from Bowen High School in 1933. He then went on to attend Carthage College and received his Bachelor's Degree from Purdue University in Civil Engineering.
      Bill had worked for the State of Illinois, building highways. He had also worked constructing railroads at the ordinance plant in Burlington, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy as a gunnery and supply officer during WWII in the American and Asiatic Pacific Theatres. He received his honorable discharge in November 1945.
      After WWII he returned home and farmed. Bill was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, holding all offices, including Master for more than one term. He was also a member of the Quincy Consistory. Bill and his family had been members of Bentley Saddle Club. He served as treasurer for the Denver Christian Church, where he served as an elder and also the Memorial Hospital Board, both of which he was on the boards for many years. He was a member of the Hancock County Planning Commission. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Florida where they had a home and also boating and spending time with friends at the Keokuk Yacht Club, where for many years they were members.
      Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial following in Harmony Township Cemetery near Bentley; military rites were held.
      Memorials were directed to the Denver Christian Church or the Memorial Hospital OB Dept. in Carthage. Printy Funeral Home in Carthage was in charge of arrangements.
