Julius Gehring, 95, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, June 26, 2015, at Brookstone Acres in Columbus.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, with Rev. Theresa Brezenski officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, with military honors by The American Legion, Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Monday from 3:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Zion Lutheran Church, or the donor's choice.
Julius G. Gehring was born April 13, 1920, in Platte County, Nebraska, to Henry and Tena (Hassebrook) Gehring. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, where he was a lifelong member, and served on the church council. He attended District #72 grade school. He began farming at an early age. In 1942, Julius entered the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and was stationed in a number of states as well as many foreign countries during the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On February 16, 1947, Julius was united in marriage to Lorraine Fittje at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple returned to the farm which Julius loved and continued living there until 1979 when they moved into Columbus. Julius retired from farming in 2006. He was a life member of the American Legion Hartman Post 84.
