Ashley, N.D. - Funeral service for Herbert Oscar Speidel, 77, Ashley, is Thursday, July 8th at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation is Wednesday, July 7th from noon-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Herbert Oscar Speidel, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died July 4, 2004, at the Ashley Medical Center. Herbert was born to Gottlieb and Fredericka (Martz) Speidel on June 17, 1927, at his farm north of Ashley. He was baptized July 24, 1927, by Rev. G.L. Sprattler, confirmed in 1941 by Rev. Johanna H. Jung. Herbert attended county schools and helped on his father's farm. On June 4, 1947, Herbert was united in marriage to Emma Eszlinger by Rev. Carl Bath in the Salem Evangelical parsonage at Ashley. That year, they took over the family farm and remained for 18 years. In 1965, they moved their family to Ashley, where Herbert drove a bulk truck for the Farmer's Union, and served as the city police for a brief time. In the fall of 1967, he managed the Ashley Bowling Lanes and Cafe. In 1969, Herbert started his own construction company, Speidel Construction. His accomplishments include remodeling and building over 30 houses in the area, including the Harmony Homes. He was a member of the Ashley City Council for two years and served as church council member for three years. Herbert enjoyed woodworking, cabinetry, playing pinochle, solitaire, jigsaw puzzles, Western movies and books. He took pleasure in the presence of family, and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow, including the children in wife Emma's day care. We will miss the sparkle in his eyes and the comfort of his warm smile.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bruce (Wanda) Speidel of Ashley and Mark (DuAnn) Speidel of Milford, Iowa; two sisters, Violet (Art) Dobler of Dickinson, and Marion (Dwaine) Bertsch of Leola; five grandchildren, Jason Speidel, Leslye (Jim) Thiery, Chad (Tracy) Speidel, Robyn Speidel and Gwendy (Shawn) Just; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family prefers memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 128 or Ashley Nursing Home, PO Box 450, Ashley, ND 58413.
