The Grand Island Independent: Paul "Pierre" Robert Griess, 72, of Sutton died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at Henderson Community Hospital in Henderson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, with the Rev. Dan Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until noon Friday at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.
Mr. Griess was born Sept. 15, 1935, in Clay County to Carl and Clarice (Nuss) Griess.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Sinobia Griess; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet and Larry Driewe of Hampton, Jocelyn Hofmann of Sutton and Joleen and Brian Mowitz of St. Paul; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sheila Griess of Sutton; a brother and sister-in-law, Evon and Naomi Griess of Sutton; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Wilmer Griess, Anna Marie and Curtis N. Griess, Leota and Silas Nuss and Gertrude and Waldine Nuss, all of Sutton.
Additional survivors include grandchildren, Clinton Griess of Kunsan AFB in South Korea, Jean Driewer of Hampton, Kevin, Michelle and Colleen Hofmann, all of Sutton, Ashley Mowitz of St. Paul, Michaela, McKenzie, Maddison and Sam Griess, all of Sutton; and a great-granddaughter, Victoria Hofmann of Sutton.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Free German Reformed Salem Church near Sutton and received his education at District 66 Country School in Clay County. He was a lifelong farmer and farmed until a stroke forced him to retire in December of 1998. While farming, he was also employed at the Sutton Livestock Auction for Richard Drudik for approximately 20 years. On May 14, 1954, he married Sinobia M. Griess in Central City. He and Sinobia were blessed to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary last May.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton. He was an avid Nebraska football fan and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Robert Hofmann.
