Grafton-Harold Phillip Peter of Grafton died February 20, 2004 at Fairview Manor in Fairmont at the age of 84.
Services were held February 23, 2004 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton with the Reverend Maynard Koerner officiating. Burial was in the Sutton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Argonne American Legion Post #61 of Sutton.
Music was provided by duet of Denise Ochsner and Sue Ochsner, accompanied by Jeannine Fehr organist.
Pallbearers were Rich Schmidt, Don Syring, Eugene Ulmer, Jeff Peter, Tom Rath, and Marty Lewis.
Honorary pallbearers were Lawrence Trautman and Oscar Roemmich.
Harold was born March 6, 1919 near Grafton to Fred and Bertha (Nuss) Peter. He attended country school and Grafton High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 36th division in Europe and Africa. He was awarded a silver star, plus Good Conduct Medals for his service in combat. He was honorably discharged in August 1945.
On March 9, 1941 he was united in marriage to Thelma M. Griess at her parent's home in Sutton. They made their home on a farm near Grafton, where they farmed until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church. Sutton American Legion Post #61 and Geneva V.F.W. He had been a resident of Fairview Manor for the past seven months.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Thelma, who died January 27, 2004.
Survivors include his son Marvin and his wife Linda Peter of Sutton; three daughters, Melva and her husband Gerald Schmidt of Lincoln, Marjorie Curtis and of Lincoln and Mary Peter of Hawthorne, CA; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Kohler Mortuary of Sutton was in charge of arrangements.
