Robert Hirning:
Note:
Henry Hirning was born March 27, 1887 to Andreas and Dorothea in Neuburg, South Russia. Both of his parents died before he was 2 years old. When he was twelve years old he came to United States and their ship landed at Elis Island on November 17, 1899. He and his relatives went by train to Eureka, South Dakota and then traveled to Zeeland North Dakota. He worked as a farmhand and then went to college at Fargo, ND in 1910. He then taught school for 2 years and then went to Idaho where he was a agent for International Harvester.
In 1913 he met his future wife Katie Weber to be and they were married on May 17, 1914. They lived on the land that she had homesteaded. They tried to farm but had crop failures, no water, and rabbits by the millions that ate up their crops that they tried to grow. While they were living in Idaho, they had three children, Ruth, John and Erna. They decided to return to North Dakota. Henry traveled by train in a box car with the their livestock, household goods and farm equipment. Two months after they arrived in North Dakota, their son Wilfred was born.
After trying to farm again, Henry quit farming and went into business for himself in Zeeland, ND. He brought cream from farmers, brought metal, bought furs and even bones to be ground up for fertilizer.
Henry and Katie had three more boys Harold, Titus and Leroy (Toby), one daughter Leona, and the set of twins that died after 8 hours while they lived in ND.
The information above was provided by Wilfred Hirning. Our thanks for it.
