Dorothea (also known as Dorothy or Dora) Stickel was born on January 19, 1875 in Bessarabia, South Russia in the town of Wittenberg. Her parents were Johannes Stickel (1831-1911) and Katharina Mueller (b. 1833). Her family can be traced back in a direct line to Peter Stickel (1565-1613).
She met and later married George Scharf on November 30, 1895 while in Wittenberg. Before immigrating to America in 1899 she may have given birth to one or two sets of twins (which apparently died) plus George J. (b. 1897) and Bertha (b. 1898).
First living in Kulm, North Dakota and later on a farm outside of Wishek, North Dakota, Dorothy experienced a harsh life living on the prairie; at first in a sod and wood house along with a number of farm animals. Later on a more substantial home was built. Besides taking care of her growing family (she may have given birth to seventeen children in all) Dorothy also helped her husband with farm chores including plowing fields. Even after moving to the town of Wishek, George and Dorothy lived in a house with no indoor plumbing.
When her husband died in 1936 Dorothy was supported for a time by her children—particularly by her teenage son Ervin who quit school to work in the town grocery store. In 1941 Dorothy was remarried to Christ Bier (1880-1962) who was originally from Worms, South Russia (Find A Grave Memorial # 37852441). Dorothy never learned to read and write English and spoke a kind of Russian/German all of her life.
Dorothy’s pride and joy was always her garden. She loved flowers and harvested many baskets of vegetables, which she canned for the winter months. She cooked all her food on a wood burning stove and finally got an indoor bathroom a few years before her death.
Grandchildren were much loved by Dorothy. A bowl of candy was always kept in her front parlor just for their visits. She died on October 10, 1962 at the age of 87.

George Scharf was the son of Johann Scharf (1846-1878) and Rosine Schlenker (b. 1850). His line of the Scharf family can trace its roots back to Burgstall, Germany (near Stuttgart, Germany). His fourth great grandfather was Michael Scharf (1704-1748) who died in Burgstall.
Later generations of the Scharf family moved to Poland and German colonies in Bessarabia, South Russia. It was here where George was born in the town of Wittenberg in 1874.
George had one other sibling that is known. Her name was Anna Maria (b. 1876) and she later married Frederich Schlenker in 1895. Records show she had at least four sons.
George married his wife Dorothea Stickel in 1895 and immigrated with her to the United States in 1899. They traveled in the fall of that year on the S.S. Kensington from Antwerp, Belgium to New York City. After processing through in Ellis Island, George and Dorothea boarded a train for Kulm, North Dakota to live for a time with George’s uncle Gottleib Scharf (Find a Grave Memorial No. 62271087). They later relocated to a farm outside of Wishek, North Dakota.
George was listed as a Farm Laborer in the Twelfth Census of the United States in 1900. He could read and write German/Russian but not English and had perhaps four years of formal schooling for his entire life.
Besides the children listed here, George and Dorothea may have had four other children while still living in Wittenberg (family members recall them talking about two sets of twins) but these siblings apparently died while quite young. Two stillborn children were recorded in 1928 and 1930.
George died in Wishek on July 16, 1936 at age 62. Immediate cause of death was listed as apoplexy or stroke.

Simon Milton Schwind grew up on a farm outside Zeeland, North Dakota. His parents, Simon Schwind and Christina Wittmeier, had imigrated to the United States in 1886 along with two of his older sisters and his mother's parents. The family came from the German colony of Glueckstal, Bessarabia, South Russia.
Simon was born in 1892. Eventually the family would grow to fourteen children in all.
In 1917, at the age of twenty-five, Simon married Magdalena Dockter. Five children would be born to them, but two died in infancy. Those remaining were Milton (b.1918), Esther (b.1924) and Violet (b. 1926)
Simon worked in a variety of trades including farming and blacksmithing. For a time the family maintained a farm outside of Wishek, North Dakota near Green Lake. It was a hard life but Simon’s optimistic outlook on the world always seemed to make things work.
Unfortunately Simon’s wife Magdalena died in 1939 at the age of thirty-nine leaving him with two young daughters to raise. His son Milton, who was nineteen at the time of his mother’s death, would soon leave to join the military and World War II.
Simon later moved his girls to Wishek and was employed for the rest of his life with several jobs but primarily worked as a blacksmith. He never remarried.
By the early 1950's he had moved in with his daughter Violet and her husband Ervin Scharf.
