Dorothea Hieb Fetzer passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008, in Pocatello, Idaho.
She was born April 16, 1922, in Hague, North Dakota, to August and Anna Maria Hieb. She often spoke of her childhood on the lonely, windy plains of North Dakota and life with her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
In 1941, she moved with her family to the Rupert area, where she met Albert Fetzer. They were married December 5, 1943. Dorothea and Albert spent many years running a dairy and growing sugar beets on a farm just outside of Rupert. They had six children.
Dorothea enjoyed the rural life; her life was centered around her family, home, and farm. She raised chickens and did lots of canning, making preserves and pickles. She and her family attended the Paul Congregational Church during this time. For many years, she cleaned the church weekly.
In 1964, Dorothea and Albert purchased a home in the town of Rupert. Albert passed away from stomach cancer in November 1969. Dorothea got a full-time job at Magic Valley Foods, where she worked the swing shift and served in various capacities. For several years, she worked as a lab tech there. She was proud that she was able to meet the challenges of this difficult job. She retired in 1987.
Dorothea is survived by five children, Roger Fetzer, Delane (Bridget) Fetzer, Arthur (Debbie) Fetzer, Carol (George) Wise, and Clayton (Karen) Fetzer; her brothers and sisters, Leonard (Lillian) Hieb, Esther (Edward) Knopp, Martha (Emil) Reichert;, Arthur (Dorothy) Hieb, Etta (Joe) Baykara, Hildegard (Gene) Holy, Ella (Bill) Wall, Betty Guthrie, Clifford Hieb; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Hieb; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, one infant son, Lee Arlen, one granddaughter, Becky Fetzer, one brother, Theodore Hieb, and her parents.
Dorothea could get more done before breakfast than most people did all day. She never shied away from a hard job. In her spare time she loved to read, especially historical fiction. She was an excellent seamstress and also made many lovely crocheted items. Through the years she created many complicated and beautiful quilts for family and friends. She liked to cook and developed her own recipes. She entered many of her sewing and cooking creations in the fair and took home several ribbons.
During her retirement years, Dorothea often ate lunch at the Rupert Senior Citizen Center. She lived for a few years at the C Street Manor in Rupert, where she made many friends. She spent her last year at Cottonwood Cove retirement community in Chubbuck, Idaho, where she continued to stay active until her death. In her later years, she received much tender loving care from her son-in-law, George, who saw to her every need.
Dorothea's family would like to thank Lance Averett and the staff of Hillcrest Haven, George Sharp and Wesley Petersen and other staff at Cottonwood Cove, and Dr. David Wise for their assistance and kindness.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Paul Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Heyburn. A viewing for family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008, at Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel, 710 Sixth St.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request memorial contributions be made to the Paul Congregational Church.
