Hazen 1913-1988 Diamond Jubilee Book, Pg. 313:
Peter Sailer was born in Bestrek, Crimea, Russia, in 1860, the son of Stephan and Rosina (Hofner) Sailer. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised by an affluent family, but never was adopted.
Margaretha was the daughter of Gottlieb and Katherine (Wiedrich) Morast, born at Meschin, Crimea, in 1865. They married on the 14th October 1884 in Neusatz, Simpferopol, Crimea, South Russia.
He worked for others, but always dreamed of owing his own land, and in 1906 he, his wife and their 10 children immigrated to the United States, settling near Krem.
On their arrival in the United States, son Gottlieb had to be quarantined in Philadelphia with scarlet fever. Daughter Katherine was delegated to remain with him while the rest of the family continued on to North Dakota.
They had learned how to build sod buildings in Russia and put that knowledge to good use, constructing one 20 by 40 feet, divided into three rooms: two for living, and one for storing grain.
Hard work and frugality paid off for the family; by 1924, after only 18 years in this country, the Sailers owned a section of land, and were able to retire in Hazen, which they did in 1924.
Peter died in 1946, Margaretha in 1955. At the time of her death there were 120 living descendants. All of the children born to them were born in Russia, except the youngest, Frieda.
