Occupation: carrier for the Bismarck Tribune 1938/1940
    BISMARCK CITY DIRECTORIES
George is found in the 1938-39 and 1940-41 directories as carrier for the Bismarck Tribune, living at his parents' home.
    MILITARY
George lied about his age in order to enlist in the US Navy before the age of 18. On December 7, 1941, he was aboard the USS Nevada, docked next to the USS Arizona, in Pearl Harbor. At just 18 years old he saw many of his shipmates die. From there he was assigned to the USS Indianapolis which sailed to the Aleutian Islands. While there, the intense pressure and long hours of duty caused him to suffer a nervous breakdown.
According to Pearl Harbor Muster Rolls, George O. Weisenburger enlisted in the Navy on 4 Dec 1940 in Minneapolis, MN. A "Report of Changes" shows that the USS Nevada sailed from Long Beach, CA, to Pearl Harbor on 11 Sep 1941. On 1 Sep 1941 George was promoted from Seaman 2nd Class to Seaman 1st Class. A "Report of Changes" dated 31 Dec 1941 shows what became of all the crew of the USS Nevada. Most were assigned to other ships, some were in the Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor, and others died in the attack. On 13 Dec 1941 George had been transferred to the USS Indianopolis.
    GREAT FALLS CITY DIRECTORY
George is found twice in the city directories for Great Falls, MT: in 1944 at 2801 Second Avenue South and in 1949 with his mother.

    DATE OF BIRTH
Both his baptism record and the Weisenburger family Bible give Philipp's date of birth as 10 Jan 1881. His naturalization papers give the date at 23 Jan 1881. It is possible that this discrepancy is due to the change from the old Russian calendar.
    RUSSIAN ARMY
Oral family history suggests that Philipp was drafted into the Russian Army, went AWOL, and was smuggled out of the country. It is not known how much of this is accurate. However, it is quite likely that he left Russia to avoid the army. The enlistment period at that time was 6 years, the soldiers often had to fend for themselves for food, and many did not make it back alive. Being 'foreigners', the German Russians had no hope of moving up in the ranks. The young men had no incentives to be loyal to the Russians and many decided to come to America.
    IMMIGRATION
Philipp Weißenburger is listed on the ship's manifest for the S.S. Chemnitz, sailing from Bremen on 14 Nov 1904 and arriving in New York on 2 Dec 1904. He was 23 years old, a farmer, with a last residence of Wilhelmsthal, Russia. His final destination was Eureka, SD, and he was in possesion of $2. He travelled with Philipp Koch, a 21year old farmer from Alexanderfeld, and they were going to join his brother, Johann Koch, in Eureka.
    NATURALIZATION
Philipp filed his Declaration of Intention to become a U.S. citizen on 23 Nov 1907. On it he states that he arrived on the ship "Barbarossa." He was not found on an Barbarossa passenger lists and it was discovered that he actually arrived on the "Chemnitz." He received his Certificate of Naturalization on 4 Apr 1912. He was 31 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with gray eyes and brown hair. Also listed on the certificate are his wife, Friedricka, and the following children: Katie, age 5; Anna, age 3; and Henry, age 1. All resided in Hellwig, ND, at the time. In his Petition for Naturalization, dated 8 Dec 1911, Philipp stated that he was a carpenter and that he had lived in North Dakota since 13 Mar 1907.
    HOMESTEAD
On the same day that he filed his Declaration of Intention, 23 Nov 1907, Philipp Weisenburger filed his application for homestead of 160 acres in Section 14 of Township 131 [Hellwig], Range 68 in North Dakota. Those witnessing his Notice of Intention to Make Proof on 21 Jun 1912 were John Rott, Bernhard C. Hellwig (age 35 years, Frieda's second cousin), Adam Gohring (22 years old, Philipp's brother-in-law), and Carl Gohring. Adam Gohring stated that he had known both the land and the claimant for 4 years. Bernhard Hellwig had known the claimant about 5 years and the land 15 years. Philipp's Final Proof was filed on 5 Sep 1912. At that time he was residing on the land with his wife and 4 children. They had a 12 x 14 foot frame house with a 12 x12 foot lean-to, an 18 x 24 foot frame barn with a 12 x 18 foot shed, an 8 x 8 foot frame chicken house, a 150 foot well, and had fenced 20 acres of the land--all improvements valued at about $1000. Most of the land could not be cultivated and a claim was filed to reduce the required area of cultivation. In it Philipp stated: "SW 1/4 NE1/4 this tract is covered by an alakli lake bed, except about six acres in the northwest corner, and that portion that is not in the lake bed is covered with rocks and not suitable to cultivation. The soil in the lake bed is composed of alakli and gumbo and covered with bunch grass and weeds." [Note: gumbo is a fine, silty soil of the Western prairies which becomes sticky and nonporous when wet.] The other three tracts were similar, with two of them being completely under water in the spring of the year. In one tract "there is possibly eight acres..situated outside of the lake bed, and of this amount I have broken and placed in crop about six acres." This statement went on to describe the land: "The altitude of the land is about 1500 feet above the of the sea, precipitation possibly from fifteen to twenty inches per annum." Finally, Philipp stated: "when I first moved upon the land I caused about one half acre to be cultivated, and in this I had a garden each year since 1908. I believed that this was all of the land that could be cultivated on the entire tract, but this year after some considerable effort I succeeded in breaking about six acres more, which is planted to flax." A special agent inspected the land and recommended that "the regular requirements as to cultivation be waived". This was granted on 21 Feb 1913. Philipp's Homestead Certificate was granted on 27 Mar 1913.
    HELLWIG, ND
According to North Dakota Place Names by Douglas A. Wick, a rural post office was established on 6 Dec 1900 in the home of Ludwig Hellwig in SW 1/4 Section 19-131-67, McIntosh county, Antelope Township, about 14 miles NE of Ashley, ND. The post office was closed 15 Oct 1920 with mail going to Kulm, ND. Another source, Origins of North Dakota Place Names, says that it was a small village on SE 1/4 Section 25-131-68, about 20 miles NE of Ashley. That book also says that a Bernard Hellwig owned and operated a general store and blacksmithy until the store was destroyed by fire in 1917.
    MOVE TO BISMARCK
According to the Bismarck Daily Tribune of 20 Nov 1913, "House Building Booming in Bismarck Last Year": 'There is probably no city in the state which can show the amount of building which has been done in Bismarck this year.. Another interesting thing shown by this list is that our Russian fellow citizens are getting homes of their own here as fast as they can. There have been sixteen houses built south of Front street, everyone of them to be owned by the builder as a home. At least a dozen of them were built by Russians.' The list which follows includes "Weisenberger, $2,000, Eleventh St."
It is known that Philipp also built a church in Bismarck. From research it seems most likely that it was the First German Baptist Church, organized May 1913 and located at the corner of 8th and Rosser (just three blocks from the Weisenburger home). By 2004 that church was no longer standing.
    BISMARCK PROPERTY DEEDS
Philipp purchased his property in Bismarck on 12 May 1913 from Maggie S. and John W. Duddleston of St. Paris, OH, for the sum of $200. This property was defined as Lot 9 in Block 134 of the Williams Addition (Book 18, page 379). Then on 4 Nov 1913 he purchased the adjacent Lot 8 from the Duddlestons for the sum of $1. (Book 120, page 53)
On 9 Oct 1942 Philipp's widow Freda sold part of these properties to Albert and Margreth Ellwein of Zap, ND, for the sum of $5400. The portion sold was the "West 63.8 feet, exclusive of alley, of Lots 8 and 9, in Block 134." (Book 243, p. 599)
On 8 Jan 1944 "Freda Hauck, formerly Freda Weisenberger, and Jake Hauck, her husband," sold the remaining portion to her daughter and son-in-law, Theodore and Marcella E. Bierwagen, for the sum of "One Dollar and other Valuable Considerations." This portion was described as "East 76.2 feet of Lots 8 and 9, Block 134." (Book 250, p. 519) Then on 28 Feb 1945 the Bierwagens sold this property back to Freda Weisenberger, a widow, for $1 (Book 253, p. 641). Freda then sold it on 29 Mar 1945 to Eduard J. and Christina Rivinius of Bismarck for $1 and "other valuable consideration" (Book 257, p. 67). [Note: according to the Bismarck City Directory for 1945, Edw. Rivinius was a neighbor living at 422-11th.] [Note: In 1957 Rivinius sold the same property for $23,400.]
In 2004 the house at 400 - 11th was no longer standing. The nearby hospital had taken over the property.

    FAMILY HISTORY
At the time of their father's death, John and Harry Weisenburger were living in San Jose, CA. John was not yet married, but Harry was married with two sons, Paul, 2 years, and John, 1 year old. John, Harry, Erna, Paul and baby John all drove from California to North Dakota in John's Ford coupe. It had just the single bench seat. Paul rode in his parents' laps, while young John got to sleep on the 'shelf' behind the seat. They had to take plenty of cans of motor oil along because the car seemed to consume almost as much oil as gasoline. What a trip that must have been!

Aside his grieving widow, he leaves behind two daughters, Mrs. Katharina Rintoul, Great Falls, Montana and Marcella, still at home. 5 sons: John and Harry in San Jose, California; Henry, Arthur and Georg all in Bismarck, as well as three grandchildren, many friends and relatives. Rest to his Ashes and we give our condolences to the surviving.

    SECOND MARRIAGE
In March 1943 Frieda married widower Jacob M. Hauck in Missoula, MT. They were married by baptist minister Frederick Alf, with witnesses Juo Berit (sic) and Theo Hauck. (From address book of son John, her address in Missoula in 1943 was 1837 So. 5th St. W.) Frieda and Jacob were divorced on 21 Apr 1944.
    CITY DIRECTORIES
In a search of the city directories for Great Falls, MT, Frieda Weisenburger first appears in 1949, living at 8 South 17th with her son, George. She lived there until 1968 (when she became ill and moved to Washington with her daughter, Marcie).
    DEATH CERTIFICATE
Frieda died on 8 Dec 1968 at West Seattle General Hospital in Seattle, WA. Her residence was given as #8 - 17th St., Great Falls, Cascade, MT [she was living with her daughter Marcie in Seattle up to the time of her death]. She was autopsied the day after her death, with the cause of death given as terminal carcinomatosis and carcinoma of the stomach.
MEMORIES OF GRANDMA (by Karen Abel)
With our family in California and Grandma living in Great Falls, MT, we didn't often see her. Grandma did not write in English, but she sent frequent letters that a friend wrote for her. Grandma signed them with lots of Xs and Os and always taped a coin to the letter for each of us children. They were often dimes and quarters, but it was a real treat when we received silver dollars.
Grandma did travel a fair bit to visit various relatives, always travelling by bus. She was a very strict German Baptist and often let her views be known. Many things were considered a sin: watching television, playing cards, going to dances (even ones held at the Episcopal Church that we attended). While visiting us, however, she was known to be seen sneaking a peak around the doorway at the television. Having heard once too often that "Jesus didn't watch TV", my mother once replied to Grandma, "Mama, Jesus didn't ride the bus either!" Visits to our house always caused a flurry of activity and flour in the kitchen as Grandma baked her wonderful German kuchen.

    NOTE
In 1978 Sheila Saxelby (author of "Uncle Pete") interviewed Lizzie Weisenburger Auch. She was the source for the information that Daniel (born in 1838), Georg and Adam were all brothers and she said that their father was Daniel. There is no written documentation of their births nor of the direct connection of their father as the Daniel in these records. That connection was assumed from the records of Karl Stumpp indicating his birth in 1815. However, examination of the 1858 Census for Grossliebental indicates that the father of Georg, Daniel, and Adam was in fact Georg (1801)

A handmade pedigree chart of unknown origin suggests that Jacob had first been married to someone with the maiden name "Hienly." No record of such a marriage can be found. However, the 1910 US census would seem to show that he had been married before (see below).
    BIRTH RECORDS OF CHILDREN
No birth records could be found in the Lutheran church records from Russia, probably because the family was Baptist. The dates used here are all take from the Weisenburger family bible.
    BAPTIST RELIGION
At some point in time, the Schweigert family joined the Baptist Church. The Baptist movement in Germany began in 1834. Baptist missionaries were active in the Black Sea Region in the 1860s and 1870s. It is suggested that part of the reason for the church's popularity was that many of the established churches did not have a regular pastor. Instead, a pastor would serve many churches and could not always be present in a village when needed. People started meeting in small groups for prayer. These meetings were called "Stunden" (hours) and led to the name of the Stundist movement. Many of these Stunden members looked to the Baptist teachings to guide them. The first regular Baptist congregations were founded in Alt- and Neu-Danzig and by 1879 the Baptists received legal recognition as a protestant branch in Russia. There were 20,000 Baptists in the German Russian colonies by 1897. It is not known if Jacob Schweigert's mother and step-father had joined the Baptist Church or if he joined on his own. It is certain that he was a Baptist at the time of his marriage to Katharina Harr in about 1880.
    IMMIGRATION
The family of Jakob Scweigert immigrated to the US on the SS Chemnitz sailing from Bremen on 17 Nov 1906 and arriving in New York on 1 Dec 1906. The ship's manifest lists them as follows:
    Jacob--48 yrs. farm laborer
    Katharina--47 yrs.
    Friederika--22 yrs. maidservant
    Christian--19 yrs. farm laborer
    Johann--16 yrs.
    Eva--14 yrs.
    Anna--12 1/2 yrs.
Their final destination was listed as Eureka, SD, where they were going to join Katharina's brother, Johann Harr.
[Their son Jacob had arrived in the US in 1905.]
    NATURALIZATION
Jakob Schweigert filed his Declaration of Intention on 19 Dec 1906 in McPherson County, SD. In it he is described as being six feet tall, 185 pounds, of dark complexion, with black hair, blue eyes, and a prominent nose. It states that he was born on 28 Feb 1858 in Worms, Russia, and that he arrived in New York on 1 Dec 1906. He received his Certificate of Naturalization on 6 Nov 1912 in Ashley, ND. Children listed on it were: Ricke 12, Jakob 27, Christ 25, John 23, Eva 21, and Ana 13 [the ages of Ricke and Ana must be incorrect]. They resided in Hellwig, ND.
    HOMESTEAD
In November of 1907 Jakob filed papers to homestead 80 acres of land in North Dakota at S. 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 24 in Township 131 of Range 68 [Hellwig, ND]. Witnesses for his 'Intention to make Proof' were John Mudinger, Heinrich Gohring, Andreas Joerky, and Bernhard Hellwig, Sr. In Jakob's 1913 testimony for 'Final Proof' he states: "I had when i went on claim in 1907 10 horses and 8 cows. In 1908 I had 12 horses and 16 hed of Cattel. In 1909 i had 14 horses and 18 Hed of Cattel. In 1910 i had 16 horses and 16 Hed of Cattel. In 1911 i had 18 horses and 20 hed of Cattel and in 1912 I had 20 horses and 20 hed of Cattel, said stock was Pastured on said claim each year." Also on the 80 acres of fenced property were an 18x28 Frame House, a 24x36 Frame Barn, a 14x16 Frame Shed, an 8x8 Frame Smoke House, and a 24 foot deep well--all valued at $1500. The 'Final Proof ' was suspended because there was 'Insufficient Cultivation' on the property. Affidavits were included stating that "this land could not be broken that it was fit only for Pasture as the same is a bed of an alcohly lake, and that it is under water in the spring and untill the middel of the summer, and that it would be impossible for any portion of this land to be broken or cultivated." Another affidavit stated, "said land is in a lake Bottom and that the same is covered with water from the time the snow goes in the spring until the Month of July, and that the earliest that he has seen water leav the said land so that it could be plowed was the first of July and that in this Country where the summers are short the time left after the water leaves the said land would be entirly to short for to plant and give grain time to mature before frost." Jakob received the Certificate for full payment on the land on 10 Jun 1913.
    CENSUS
The 1910 US Census for Twp. 131, R 68 (Hellwig), McIntosh Co., ND, (ED #47, sheet 13A, 9 May 1910) lists the following: - Jacob--52 yrs., married for 30 years, Farming - Katharina--52 yrs. - Christian--22 yrs., farming
    John--20 yrs., farming - Eva--18 yrs. - Anna--16 yrs.
It indicates that Katherine gave birth to 7 children and that 6 were then living. For their marital status, it indicates "M2" for Jacob and "M1" for Katharina, suggesting that this was a second marriage for Jacob.
The 1920 US Census for Bismarck, Burleigh, ND (ED #62, sheet 11A, 12 Jan 1920) lists the following at 611-10th Street:
    Jacob Schweigert--62 yrs.
    Katherine--62 years
    John--30 years
It indicates that Jacob owned his home, free (not mortgaged), that they had all immigrated in 1906, and that Jacob and John were laborers (farm).
The 1930 US Census for Bismarck (ED#8-4, Sheet 18B) taken on 17 Apr 1930 shows Jacob and Katie as 72 years old. They were 22 at the time of their marriage. Jacob was a laborer who owned his own home, valued at $3000.
    BISMARCK CITY DIRECTORIES
Jakob and Katharina are listed in the directories for 1914-15, 1916-17, 1919-20, 1928-29 and 1932-33. In the first one their address was 1012 Rosser; thereafter it was 611-10th. After Jacob's death, Katharina was listed in the directories for 1938-39, 1940-41, and 1945 at the same address.
    PROPERTY DEEDS (611 - 10th in Bismarck)
Jakob purchased Lot 9 of Block 46 of the Northern Pacific Second Addition on 27 Sep 1915 from Eliza M. Suttle, a widow of Bismarck, for the sum of $350 (Book 121, page 396). On 7 Aug 1936 Catharina Schweigert, widow of Jacob Schweigert, Sr., was granted Old Age Assistance and Burleigh County became a lienholder of the property. On 3 May 1945 [Note: this is the date upon which Katharina became ill and entered the Baptist Old Peoples' Home] a deed noted that the property had been acquired by the county through tax deed proceedings for nonpayment of taxes for years 1932-1942, with interest and penalties totalling $1500. The property had been offered for sale at an annual tax sale but as there was no bid the property stayed with the county. Thus on 3 May 1945 it was sold to J. J. Schweigert (Katharina's son) of McLaughlin for $1500 (Book 255, p. 146). That same day J. J. Schweigert sold the property to Karl Gieser of Bismarck for $1 and "other valuable considerations" (Book 254, p. 325). [Note that Karl Gieser was the superintendent of the Baptist Old Peoples' Home.]
    CAUSE OF DEATH
Chronic myocarditis due to coronary disease, with hypertrophy of prostate with obstruction. The death certificate says that he had cystotomy surgery on 23 Jul 1934 and prostatectomy surgery on 13 Aug 1934 (the date of his death). He died at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck.
    OBITUARY
The following obituary was printed in German in Der Staats-Anzeiger on 17 August 1934:
"Mr. Jakob Schweigert, who was a resident of Bismarck for 23 years and was generally known and respected in the German districts, died in the hospital due to old age on Monday, 13 August, just before 11 pm. The deceased was born on 28 February 1858 in Rohrbach, South Russia, and was age 78 years, 5 months, 18 days at the time of his death. He came with his family to America about 30 years ago, to South Dakota to be precise, where he lived for two years, then to the Ashley region in North Dakota, where he farmed for five years, and then he came here to settle in Bismarck. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and two sons, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The daughters are: Mrs. Philipp Weissenburger of Bismarck and Mrs. John Bentz of Ronan, Montana. One son, J.J. Schweigert, lives in McLaughlin, South Dakota, and the other, John Schweigert, in Butte, Montana. We extend our heartfelt condolences. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 pm at the English Baptist church, led by minister J.J. Lippert."
    PROBATE
Jakob Schweigert died intestate and his estate went through probate between December 1935 and August 1937. His widow Katharina was appointed administrator and notice was sent of such appointment to her children J.J. Schweigert, Anna Bentz, Johan Schweigert, Fredericka Weisenburger, and to her grandchildren Ida Grenz and Henry Gohring. Jakob's estate consisted of his home in Bismarck and "judgment against Edward Blumhardt of Ashley N.D. That the total value of all said real estate is the sum of $750; that the total of all said estate in the sum of $1000; that the total annual rents, profits and income of all said real estate is of the probable value of $125; that the value of all said personal property is the sum of $300."

    NOTES ON GIVEN NAME
Baptism and confirmation records give the name Catharina Elisabetha. Family Book records for Endersbach show Christina Elisabetha, with Christina crossed out and Catharina written above.
In the church records for Schluchtern there is a separate page inserted next to her birth record (which gives a birth date of 10 Apr 1805). It is dated "Endersbach 6 April 1826" and appears to be a statement certifying the illegitimate birth of Christina Elisabetha in Schluchtern on 3 Apr 1805 and her subsequent baptism there. It states that she will be emigrating to Odessa, Russia. Her parents' names are given and it is made quite clear that they were not married at the time of her birth. However, it appears that her birth was legitimized after her parents were later married.
The Russian church records alternatively use the names Christina and Christiana.
    EMIGRATION
Endersbach Family Book records indicate for Catharina/Christina Elisabetha: "3 May 1826 nach Odessa".
    Stumpp's book has two listings:
Maier, Christine Elisabetha, aus Endersbach/Waiblingen, Wu, 1825, nach Odessa.
    Mayer, Christian, aus Endersbach, 1826.
[Family Book records for Endersbach did not indicate any other Mayers besides Christina that emigrated to Russia.]

    MARRIAGE
    (From Erdmannhausen archivist, Dieter Duill)
"On the occasion of a marriage the couple had before, or not long after, the ceremony to establish a marriage inventory at the village/town hall. The THEURER oo HARTMAYER (-MAIER) original inventory at our archives has about 20 pages (in the beautiful old German script) of everything they possessed. Bernhard THEURER was given 800 fl=florins=Gulden and 30 x=Kreuzer (1 fl=60x) in cash by his father. Regina THEURER owned fields, vineyards, meadows worth 1,092 florins, plus movables (her clothes, bedlinen, household contents) all listed up in detail worth 50 fl 48 x. After the deduction of borrowed money of 390 fl 20 x, the whole sum was 1,539 fl 58 x. The document is signed by the THEURER couple.. To give you an idea of how much money this was, an average farm house would have cost about 500/600 fl."
    EMIGRATION
From Dieter Duill, Erdmannhausen archivist: "People who wanted to emigrate officially had to appear before the local council to ask for consent. Bernhard, 44, and Regina, 40, did so in April 1819 (minutes of the council). They owned 2,000 fl now. Often enough, councils were glad to let people go, those who only owned next to nothing or up to about 100/300 fl, or so. But as the THEURERs owned quite some money the council asked them to stay, probably also telling them of the dangers of the long journey, during which many people died and never arrived at the 'promised land'. But as Bernhard and Regina insisted on emigrating, the council finally gave its consent. Together with the THEURERs, Regina's 'Kriegsvogt'=curator ad litem (Latin)=court guardian appeared before the council. As married women did not have full equal rights at court or council, they had to have a spokesman."
The Erdmannhausen Family Register for Johann Bernhard Theurer says: "Er ist mit Frau and allen seinen Kindern in der Nacht Zwischen dem 7ten and 8ten Juli 1819 in das südliche Rußland ausgewandert." (He emigrated with his wife and all his children to southern Russia in the night between the 7th and 8th of July 1819.)
According to Karl Stumpp's book: "Theurer, Joh. Bernhard, aus Erdmannshausen/Ludwigsburg/Wu, 1819, nach Freudental/Od; Fr: Christiane; S: Joh. Jakob 15, Georg Friedr. 12, Johannes 8, Joh. Gerhard 1". This information would appear to be accurate except for the names of his wife and youngest son. Also, it does not include the daughters who came with him.
Another reference was found in "Ostwanderung der Wuerttemberger 1816-1822". Table 23 is an 'Index of Emigrants from Ober Amt Marbach 23 Apr 1819-Dec 1822'. This table lists the following:
Joh. Bernh. Theurer, Farmer from Erdmannhausen
    Wife Regina
Children: Jakob 15, Gg. Frdr. 12, Sibille Katar. 9, Johs. 8, Elis. Magd. 5, Joh. Gerh. 1
    Fortune: 2000 fl.
Guarantor: Jak. Pommer [NOTE: Jacob Pommer was a witness at the baptisms of the Theurer children.]
    PETERSTAL
Bernhardt Theurer is on the list of Peterstal colonists who received wheat seed in the fall of 1820 and spring of 1821. (Fond #252-1-280)
In a document regarding land distribution in Peterstal, signed on 5 May 1827, one of those signing was "Burgermeister Theurer." This was most likely Bernhard, as his oldest son would have been only 23 years old.
    HISTORY
(NOTE: Source unknown; received from Lola Weber)
"Chapter One: Freudental, South Russia 1819 - The icy wind rose howling across the Russian prairie as Johan 'Bernhard' Theurer and his family finally reached their destination of Freudental, a beautiful little village laid out on the north bank of the Baraboi River about 20 miles west of Odessa in southern Russia. It has been a long and grueling trip from Erdmannhausen, Ludwigsburg, Wurttemberg in Germany; but as they rode in their wagon, Bernhard's eyes sparkled with pleasure at the strange magnetic power of the scene before him. They could see that it was rich with grasslands and on the south bank of the river there were several lofty hills which would provide fine building stone for their new home. Upon their arrival into the village, they were warmly greeted by the Abel family, the Vogels' and the Schillings' who were all from the same district of Ludwigsburg. ..
"For the Theurer family, a farming family, the poor harvest in Germany in the years 1809 through 1816 led Bernhard to look to the promised land in the East to provide a future for his four sons. Bernhard's oldest son, Johan 'Jacob' was 15 years old and soon ready to be on his own. The raising of sheep was a very important enterprise in Freudental from the very beginning of the settlement. Bernhard's sons, Georg Friedrich, age 12 and Johanes, age 8, spent many an hour tending sheep for their father.
"However, only a few short years after settling in Freudental, there was a shortage of acreage for Bernhard and his sons to grow as the population of the colony increased considerably. By 1828 it had become necessary to establish a daughter colony named Neu-Freudental where 47 families resettled. Most of the families were sons and daughters of the mother colony, however, a few came directly from the Kingdom of Wurttemberg after a brief stay in Freudental."

    EMIGRATION TO RUSSIA
The Glatten family book register for the family of Johann David Harr and Anna Maria Gühring shows that their children Jacob Friedrich, Johann David, Johannes, Johann Matthaus and Anna Maria all emigrated to Russia. Passport data can be found for Friedrich and David in 1817. As the other three were not married at the time, it is possible that they traveled under the passport of one of their older married brothers. It is known that Johannes arrived in Russia in 1817. His date of birth corresponds very closely to that calculated from the ages in the documents below. While one of those documents gives his place of origin as Glatt (rather than Glatten), no record of a Johannes Harr from Glatt can be found. Based on other information, it is currently assumed that he was actually this Johannes from Glatten.

    THEORY
At this time, it can only be theorized that the Margaretha Koch who married Johannes Harr in Russia is the same as the Margaretha Koch born in Schwaikheim. However, given the facts below, it seems a logical conclusion, at least until other facts become known.
    FACTS KNOWN ABOUT MARGARETHA KOCH
Age: In the 1858 Census for Grossliebental (taken on 1 Jan), her age is given as 66 (suggesting a birth in 1791). Her age at death is given as 77 years, 3 months, 4 days (suggesting a birth date about 27 Nov 1792).
Arrival in Russia: From an 1826 document requesting acceptance into the colony of Grossliebental, Margaretha Koch and Johannes Harr, both single, arrived through Ismail quarantine in 1817 and were married later that year [probably in Odessa].
Stumpp: Adam Friedrich Koch and Gottlieb Koch both left for/arrived in Russia in 1817 from Schwaikheim.
From Schwaikheim Family Register: Her brother Johann Gottlieb Koch emigrated with his family to Caucasus on 11 Jun 1817. Her sister Katharina Barbara married Joh. Gutenberger and emigrated in 1817 (destination not given). Margaretha emigrated with permission (ist mit Erlaubniß ausgewandert) (date and destination not given).
Margaretha Koch was born in Schwaikheim on 6 Jan 1793, only 1 month and 10 days different from the birth date suggested by age at death of the Margaretha (Koch) Harr who died in Alexanderhilf.
No passport information was found for Johannes Harr. However, his two older brothers, Jacob Friedrich and Johann David Harr, obtained passports in Freudenstadt on 12 Jun 1817. This was only one day later than Johann Gottlieb Koch in Waiblingen--so it seems quite possible that they would have traveled together on the journey to Russia.
Of further interest is the fact that the oldest daughter of Johannes and Margaretha (Koch) Harr married Johannes Klink/Klenk. It appears that the Klenk family was also from Schwaikheim.
    CENSUS
The 1858 Census for Grossliebental lists the "Widow Margaretha Harr" 66, along with sons: Johann 29, his wife Katharina (arrived from Neu Freudental) 28 and sons Johann 5 and Daniel 3; and Daniel 26, and his wife Friederika (arrived from Güldendorf) 21.

    BAPTISM
Witnesses at Johann Georg Huber's baptism were Friedrich Näher, Wagner in Closter Maulbronn (Clara's brother) and Johann Georg Bickel.
    DEATH
Georg Huber's death record indicates that he was 78 years old, was born in Enzberg, Wuerttemberg, and was married at the time of his death.
    CENSUS:
According to Stumpp's book, the following went to Russia in 1809 and were in Rohrbach in 1816:
Georg Huber 41 from Sickingen/Karlsruhe, Baden
    wife Elisabetha 33
    children from first wife:
    Barbara 16, Margaretha 15, Eva 13, Dorothea 11, Katharina 8, Georg 6
    Stepchildren:
    Eva Kuprian 16, Sophia K. 6, Johann K. 5
The reference to Sickingen seems to be in error. The death records in Russia for his children Margaretha and Georg both indicate that they were born in Winzenbach. The marriage record there for Johann Georg and Anna Maria Lang says that his father was Johann Georg from Enzberg, OberAmt Maulbronn.
