    He was educated at Wm & Mary College, practiced law, and was a member of the house of burgesses from York County from 1752-1776. He was a member of all the revolutionary conventions. During the revolution he was state examiner of claims, and for many years after a member of the Board of the Eastern State Hospital, of which board he was president at the time of his death.

    Of œBelfield, York Co., member of the Council.Son of Dudley Digges, member of the Council, grandson of Edward Digges.Cole as the oldest surviving son inherited the "E. D. Plantation" as well as an established and going plantation, "Newport News," in Warwick County. The latter came to him through his mother, Susannah Cole. [15] It was early in his career when, in 1714, he bought the John Martin property in Yorktown.
    Before his death he installed his eldest son Edward on the "E. D. Plantation" and likely son William, by due course of arrangements, on the Warwick operation, leaving at his death his town acquisitions in Williamsburg and more particularly those in Yorktown to his third son Dudley. Both William and Dudley were "Infants under the age of 21" at the time of his death in 1744., , , ,, , , ,

    Susannah and Dudley lived at œBellfield, where their tombstones still stand. Dudley represented Warwick County in the House of Burgesses (1695-7) and served the king on the Council (1698-1710). He paid quit rents on 1,350 acres in York County, 216 acres in Elizabeth City County, and 4,626 acres in Warwick in 1704. 
    Dudley established his seat at œE D Plantation, which produced a sweet-scented tobacco branded as œE Dees. As many as 100 slaves toiled in the tobacco fields on œE D Plantation.
    Susannah and Dudley were the parents of four children before Susannah died at age 34.

    Bellfield Plantation, York Co., VA
    Edward immigrated to the Virginia Colony about 1650 and purchased the Bellfield Plantation in present-day York County, Virginia, near Yorktown. He served the Colony as councilor, as well as auditor-general, receiver-general, a Virginia agent in England, and governor for a two-year term, the latter during the period of the Cromwellian Commonwealth.
    Gov. Edward Digges and wife Elizabeth Page had six sons and seven daughters. By the time of his death (March 15, 1674), only eight children were still living, for the Governor's will leaves legacies "to all my children being four boys and four girls".,,

    William settled at œBolthrope, a few miles northwest of Nutmeg Quarter. œBolthorpe, which would remain a Cole manor for nearly 100 years, lay next to œWindmill Point of Col. Miles Cary. William added 1,433 acres œcommonly called Newport News 20 April 1685.
    William Cole served on the Council (1675-1692). During Bacon™s Rebellion he was one of two members authorized to negotiate with Bacon. He sided with Berkeley and was denounced as one of the governor™s œevil advisors. He was once deputy escheater.
