John Cochran, who was a tanner and shoemaker by trade, was a native of Massachusetts, where he was born about the year 1790. He went to Ohio about 1812, and with three of his brothers served in the second war with England. His father was a Scotchman, who served in the Revolutionary War. He was an old-line Whig, and for fifteen years was justice of the peace.
By 1832, he was living in Taylor Township, Greene County IN next to his brother, James. Part of this land is still owned and farmed to this day by descendants of James.
The census records show that in 1850, he and his wife Elizabeth (his second wife) were farming in Taylor, Greene, Indiana. Living with them were children John (20) and William (18) from Johnâ„¢s first marriage, and Mary (12), Henry (9), Sarah (7), Margaret (5), and James (2 months) from his current marriage.By 1860, he had moved to Christian County IL, where he died.

Elizabeth Seaton was of German descent, and was born in Pennsylvania. She married John Cochran in Indiana, and with him moved to the vicinity of Vincennes. Mrs. Elizabeth (Seaton) Cochran died in 1833, having become the mother of five boys: H. Seaton; Elzy and Sydney, both dead; John A., whose name introduces this biographical sketch; and W. H.Seaton, the eldest, resides in Washington, but formerly lived in Barber county, Kansas, from which county he was twice elected representative in the state legislature.

Glass Amos and two of his sons were soldiers in the War of 1812 and served from Franklin County, OH, Second Division, Fourth Brigade. Glass Amos was an Ensign and his sons were Privates. After the War, most of the family moved to Indiana. In 1820, Glass Amos and Mahitable, three sons and two daughters were in Knox County.

Glass Cochran gave each of his boys a farm and settled his sons around him. Only one of them died in Blandford and he had no children, so posterity is extinct in Blandford. James was 13 when his adopted father brought him to this country. All were from Ireland, but were Scotsmen.
The Cochran family has ever been devoted to the Union, and has made a record of which it may be justly proud. The grandfather was in the Revolutionary War, the father and three brothers served in the War of 1812; John A. and three brothers were in the Civil War, where he was promoted to be a lieutenant, just before he was mustered out. Three sons of H. Seaton Cochran were also soldiers in the Civil War; and the oldest of these, together with his son, was a member of the "Rough Riders," a unique organization of the Spanish-American War.
